LOS ANGELES - No. 2 UCLA Women's Basketball fell to Washington State 85-82 on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
With 26 seconds remaining and the Bruins down four, 82-78, Charisma Osborne made both of her free throws, and the Bruins trailed by two, 82-80. WSU sank one of two from the line on their next possession to go up three before Kiki Rice drove to the basket on the next UCLA possession and was fouled. The sophomore added two more from the line, and the Bruins trailed by one, 83-82, with 20 seconds to go.
WSU's Bella Murekatete made two free throws on the Cougars' next possession, giving the Bruins the ball back with 16 seconds remaining, down 85-82. With the Bruins trailing, Rice had the ball in her hands with 3.5 seconds to go and launched a deep three that hit off the front of the rim as time expired and the Bruins fell 85-82 on Sunday afternoon.
The Bruins, who trailed by as much as 20 points a few minutes into the third quarter, began the fourth quarter down 12 points before roaring back. Angela Dugalić made a layup and Londynn Jones made her fifth 3-pointer of the game to cut the Cougars lead to seven, 65-58, with 8:44 to play.
UCLA continued their three-point barrage a minute later. Osborne added another triple after some nice ball movement and an assist from Lina Sontag and the Bruins trailed by four points, 72-68, with 4:41 left on the clock.
After Washington State made multiple foul shots, Rice took the ball to the rack with 1:59 to go and scored before being fouled on the play. She made the ensuing foul shot to make it a four-point game, 77-73, setting up a frantic finish in Pauley Pavilion.
Rice led the Bruins (16-3, 5-3 Pac-12) in the scoring column on Sunday afternoon, finishing with 25 points, six rebounds and five assists. Osborne added another 20 points, four rebounds, and five assists while playing all 40 minutes. Jones chipped in with an additional 19 points and five 3-pointers, and Dugalić finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Murekatete led Washington State (15-6, 4-4 Pac-12) with 20 points and seven rebounds.
To begin the game on Sunday, Rice made a layup, and Jones hit an early three on the Bruins' first two possessions, but the Cougars used an 8-0 run to take a 10-5 lead five minutes into the first quarter.
Jones stopped the Cougars run with her second 3-pointer of the quarter, providing the Bruins with a spark on offense to close out the quarter. During that run, Christeen Iwuala made two baskets down low for the Bruins, while Dugalić and Gabriela Jaquez added a bucket each.
Rice closed the quarter strongly for the Bruins, driving to the hoop and finishing at the rim as the shot clock expired, cutting the deficit to two, 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Jones gave UCLA the lead to begin the second quarter, 20-19, sinking her second 3-pointer of the day, giving her an early 10 points. However, the Cougars responded instantly with a 19-4 run over the next eight minutes to take a 38-22 lead with 2:26 remaining in the half. The Bruins re-established their offensive rhythm in the final few minutes of the half and scored eight quick points to enter halftime down 46-30.
For the half, the Cougars shot 65% from the field (19-29), and were 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Charlisse Leger-Walker led all scorers in the half with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting.
