Bruins Take Down No. 2 Ohio State, 2-1
October 11, 2024 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team took down No. 2 Ohio State 2-1 on Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Edrey Caceres and Jose Contell got on the scoresheet to secure the win for the Bruins.
UCLA (5-3-4, 2-2-2 Big Ten) scored twice within a minute to hand Ohio State (9-1-2, 4-1-1 Big Ten) its first loss of the season.
After Ohio State opened the scoring in the 51st minute, the Bruins dug deep to get their fourth win over a ranked team in 2024.
Graduate student Edrey Caceres got UCLA level at the 69:05 mark. The midfielder held his run at the top of the box as sophomore Phillip Naef dribbled down the right side of the Ohio State flank. Naef dribbled inside, left one defender behind, and sent a ball across goal to Caceres. The Marquette transfer then buried the shot, making things tied at 1-1 with 20 minutes to go.
Just over a minute later, the Bruins struck again. Freshman Artem Vovk was played through on goal and his shot hit off the crossbar, where the ball rebounded back out to Contell. The Valencia, Spain, native picked the ball out of the air off the bounce off the crossbar, took a touch to settle himself, and then slotted his shot past two defenders and into the goal, putting UCLA up 2-1 with 19 minutes remaining.
With his goal Contell now has five points (2G, 1A) in his last two games, and has been directly involved in three of UCLA's last four goals scored.
The Bruins would hold on from there as Ohio State tried to find an equalizing goal. Sophomore keeper Wyatt Nelson made a huge stop off a Buckeyes corner with five minutes to go to preserve the win, and the Bruins ran out winners on Friday night.
Up Next: UCLA hits the road to take on Rutgers on Friday, October 18. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PT.
