No. 15 UCLA Edged by No. 25 Indiana, 2-1

October 25, 2024 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – No. 15 UCLA found itself on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision at the hands of No. 25 Indiana on Friday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

The Bruins (6-4-5, 3-3-3) see their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end while the Hoosiers (8-3-5, 6-1-2) remain at the top of the Big Ten table after extending their unbeaten streak to eight matches.

UCLA created majority of the scoring chances with 15 attempts on goal to Indiana's five. Graduate midfielder Edrey Caceres netted the lone goal for the Bruins, his team-leading fifth of the campaign.

Providing his fourth assist of the season was freshman Shakir Nixon and fellow freshman Tamir Ratoviz recorded his third.

In a physical contest, UCLA was whistled for 16 fouls and Indiana committed just two.

Indiana opened the scoring in the 25th minute when defender Josh Mahen pinged a well-placed ball over the top to Quinton Elliot on the right flank to get in behind the UCLA defense. Elliot settled the ball before squaring a pass into Justin Weiss and the forward provided a first-time finish to give his team the 1-0 advantage.

The Bruins grew into the game after conceding the opening goal. Jose Contell and Edrey Caceres each fired a pair of shots as UCLA started to unlock the Hoosiers' defense.

In the 39th minute, UCLA nearly found its equalizer when Pablo Greenlee combined with Edrey Caceres just outside the penalty area. Caceres slipped a pass to Greenlee making a run in between the Indiana center halves and Greenlee - racing up the pitch from his defensive position - saw his shot pushed onto the post by the visiting goalkeeper.

The Bruins held the advantage in the shots column (11-4) at the break, but just two of those attempts were on target and the Hoosiers maintained its 1-0 lead.

UCLA carried this momentum into the second half and worked another brilliant attacking momentum after a throw-in from its own half sprung Tamir Ratoviz down the right wing. The Oak Park, Calif. native found Shakir Nixon making a run in behind and his cross was tapped home by Sveinn Hauksson, however, a VAR check chalked off the goal after an offside was detected in the build-up.

Ratoviz nearly scored the leveler when his headed effort was tipped over the bar in the 60th minute in another positive moment for the Bruins.

On the ensuing corner kick, Indiana counted when goalkeeper JT Harms launched a long ball to Samuel Sarver making a run into the attacking third. Sarver promptly finished into the bottom corner to double the visitors' lead.

UCLA answered less than five minutes later when Nixon picked out Ratovitz with his back to goal. He found Caceres at the top of the box and the midfielder blasted into the back of the net to bring the Bruins within a goal.

Up Next: The Bruins will host Washington for the regular season finale on Nov. 3 inside Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The match will be broadcast on Big Ten Network for the 12 p.m. PT scheduled kickoff.
