Bruins Down Northwestern 1-0 in Big Ten Opener
September 12, 2025 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer program opened Big Ten Conference play on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Northwestern at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Sergi Solans Ormo scored the game-winning goal for the Bruins in the 86th minute.
With the score tied at 0-0 in the 86th minute, the Bruins had the ball on the left side of the field near midfield with Shakir Nixon. Nixon then chipped the ball over the defenders across the backline which found Francis Bonsu. Bonsu then cut inside and dribbled past two defenders before rolling the ball to Solans Ormo, who curled a shot past the Northwestern goalkeeper and into the top right corner of the net, putting UCLA up 1-0.
The goal was Solans Ormo's second of the year, while Bonsu recorded his first collegiate assist, and Nixon added his first assist of the year.
The Bruins controlled the game throughout, outshooting the Wildcats 14-4, and had eight shots on goal compared to Northwestern's one shot on goal.
Statistically, Solans Ormo led the attack with five shots, and three on target, while freshman goalkeeper Ryan Tiltack secured his first career shutout in UCLA's 1-0 win.
UCLA started the match on the front foot, controlling possession throughout the first half hour. Solans Ormo almost had the break through in the ninth minute, but Rafael Ponce De Leon in net for Northwestern parried the shot away.
After the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0, the Bruins continued to pile on the pressure in the second half. Solans Ormo had a shot saved in the 50th minute of action, while Schinieder Mimy had another attempt saved in the 53rd minute.
Bonsu came in for UCLA in the 66th minute and provided a spark on the right side for the Bruins. After making a few runs in behind the Northwestern defense that didn't pay off, Bonsu made a run in the 86th minute and was found by Nixon before playing the ball to Solans Ormo, who scored the game-winner.
Up Next: UCLA continues Big Ten play on Friday, September 19, when it hosts Wisconsin. Kickoff is set for 7 pm PT and the game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
