UCLA Falls to USC, 1-0, in Battle for Big Ten Regular Season Title

October 27, 2024 | Women's Soccer

Carson, Calif. ย โ€“ In front of 6,281 fans at Dignity Health Sports Park, No. 8 UCLA lost to No. 6 USC, 1-0. The victory enabled USC to win the school's first-ever Big Ten Conference regular season title in any sport. UCLA finishes the regular season in second place and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament in Minnesota.
ย
The only goal of the game was scored in the 36th minute by USC's Maile Hayes, whose shot from a through ball by Helen Sampaio got by UCLA goalkeeper Ryan Campbell.
ย
The Bruins (13-3-3, 8-1-2 in the Big Ten) nearly answered right back, but USC's defense was there to clear away an on-the-money ball by Quincy McMahon to Val Vargas in front of goal.
ย
The Trojans (14-1-2, 10-0-1) had nearly scored in the 16th minute after a takeaway, but Simone Jackson's shot just missed the mark, hitting the right post and skipping out of bounds. In the 26th minute, a header by Aaliyah Farmer off a free kick missed high.
ย
UCLA had its best opportunity in the 67th minute on a shot in the box by Maya Evans that was saved at left post by USC goalkeeper Laurence Gladu. And in the 78th minute, Kara Croone sent a ball into the box that was misplayed by USC, giving the Bruins a chance at goal with Gladu out of position, but the Trojans cleared it out of bounds before the closest Bruin could get to it.
ย
"As soon as we conceded, the game changed a little bit," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "We had some good chances at the end of the first half, and in the second half I was fairly pleased with, at the very least, the feeling of the game and how it changed in our favor for a good chunk of the second half."
ย
USC outshot the Bruins by a 10-5 margin, holding UCLA under 10 shots for the first time all season. Campbell finished with three saves, and Gladu had two for the Trojans.
ย
"There's a lot to be learned today," Aozasa said. "We're obviously disappointed with the loss. I don't think you have to lose to learn, but it does throw it right on the table. We know we need to be better in those first 30 minutes of the game."
ย
UCLA will face either the No. 8 or 9 seed in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 3 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium at the University of Minnesota.
