Vargas Scores Game-Winner Again as Bruins Beat Rutgers, 1-0
September 25, 2025 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES - For the second consecutive game, junior Val Vargas scored the game's lone goal, leading No. 4 UCLA to a 1-0 victory over Rutgers on Thursday evening.
Vargas scored her goal on a set piece in the 54th minute, tapping a free kick outside of the box to Emma Egizii, who quickly passed back. Vargas one-timed a left-footed shot, tucking it into the left corner for the goal, her second of the year. The goal was made possible by Oruha Hayashi, who stole a pass in the Rutgers' back third and drew the foul just outside of the box.ย
The Bruin defense was superb, allowing zero shots on goal and just three shots in total while recording their seventh shutout in 10 games. Freshman goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor earned the shutout, her fourth solo shutout of the year. UCLA still has yet to concede a goal to Rutgers in four games played.
"I was really pleased with the game today," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "The things we asked our group to really lock in on in regard to tempo, in regard to movement and technical quality, I thought they did a really good job."ย
UCLA improves to 7-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Big Ten play. Rutgers falls to 3-2-4, 1-2-1.ย
The Bruins will next host Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1pm. Following the game will be a team autograph session. Tickets are on sale at www.uclabruins.com/tickets.
