UCLA Falls in Penalty Kicks to Michigan in Big Ten Tournament Semifinals
November 10, 2024 | Men's Soccer
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – The UCLA men's soccer team fell in penalty kicks to Michigan 4-2 on Sunday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Big Ten Tournament held at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. Jose Contell scored in regulation to force overtime and then penalties.
With the win Michigan (8-3-7) advances to the Big Ten Tournament final to be held on Sunday, November 17, while the Bruins (7-5-6) await news of where they will play in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show is slated for Monday, November 18.
The Bruins started the game with the majority of the possession, and had a great chance early on, as Edrey Caceres' strike from just outside the box in the fifth minute flashed just over the crossbar, and the game remained 0-0.
Michigan scored in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead, despite UCLA controlling much of the ball throughout the opening 20 minutes of action. Following the goal UCLA kept the pressure on and kept control of the ball but could not convert any of the opportunities into goals until the second half.
With the Bruins on a counterattack in the 53rd minute, a Michigan defender dragged Andre Ochoa down in the box, earning UCLA a penalty kick. Contell went to the spot and had his initial penalty saved, before following the play through and scoring on the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.
That's how the game would stay throughout the remainder of regulation, as neither squad could find a breakthrough.
In the overtime periods both teams tried to keep control of the ball, but neither squad had any clear cut chances to win the game until Michigan's Jason Bucknor hit the crossbar in the final few minutes of double overtime.
As neither squad could find a winner in overtime, the game went to penalties.
In penalty kicks the Bruins went second with Sveinn Hauksson taking the first penalty. The Michigan keeper saved his kick, while Michigan scored their penalty kick in the first round. Both teams would score in the next two rounds and Michigan held a 3-2 advantage heading into the fourth round of penalty kicks.
In the fourth round, Michigan scored theirs while Tarun Karumanchi had his penalty saved by the Michigan keeper. Thus, the Wolverines advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final.
Up Next: UCLA will find out its NCAA Tournament destination on Monday, November 18.
