UCLA Advances After 2-1 NCAA First Round Win Over CBU

November 15, 2024 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – No. 2 seed UCLA survived in overtime in the NCAA first round against California Baptist, defeating the Lancers, 2-1, in double overtime at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Senior Jayden Perry won the game with a sudden victory penalty kick goal in the 102nd minute after fellow senior Quincy McMahon was fouled in the box.

Freshman Kara Croone had opened the scoring for the Bruins just 1:04 into the game after stealing the ball from a Lancer defender and putting her shot into the left side netting for her first collegiate goal.
The Bruins, however, were unable to add on in the remainder of regulation, allowing the Lancers to remain just one strike away, and with just over six minutes remaining in the second half, CBU took their shot. After Morgan Witz sent a ball over the top, Lauryn White shot past Bruin goalkeeper Ryan Campbell into the back of the net. The assistant referee called for an offside on the play, but a video review overturned the call, giving the Lancers the equalizer.

UCLA came out strong in the overtime, earning a pair of corner kicks in the first minute and half of the extra time. On the second corner kick, Perry had a header in front of goal that was blocked in front of the goal by CBU defender Natalia Castro, and Perry's second-chance shot was also blocked. The Lancers had a dangerous opportunity in the 97th minute following a free kick, but Mia Scranton's shot was deflected out of bounds.

It took just 1:15 into the second overtime for UCLA to close it out after McMahon was fouled in the box. The video review went in the Bruins' favor this time, confirming the penalty kick, which Perry buried with authority for her third goal of the year, all on penalties.
"This is playoff soccer," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "It's never going to be easy, but thankfully all the wins count the same. But I was really proud of the group today because today took grit. Today took heart. We had a goal against us that maybe didn't go our way, but they found a way. The way certain players stepped up in overtime I thought was very good. That's definitely something to build on going forward."

The Bruins outshot the Lancers, 16-5, with Campbell making two saves, and CBU goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien making three. The Lancers, who were making their first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance, ended their season with a 10-7-3 record. UCLA improves to 17-3-3 and will host No. 7 seed Virginia Tech in the second round on Friday, Nov. 22.
