November 29, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELESย โ The UCLA women's volleyball team dropped a four-set contest to No. 13 Oregon in the regular season finale on Friday night inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 22-25.ย
On a day dedicated to its seven departing seniors, the Bruins (14-15, 8-12) started strong by taking the opening set. However, the nationally-ranked Ducks (22-7, 14-6) rallied to win the next three sets, each by a narrow margin of five points or fewer.
UCLA was hampered by 23 attack errors, resulting in a hitting percentage of just .138, their second-lowest of the season. Their season low of .119 also came against Oregon on Nov. 2.
Mimi Colyer led her team with 21 kills and added 12 digs to record a double-double. Michelle Ohwobete and Noemie Glover also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Cheridyn Leverette spearheaded the UCLA attack with 23 kills, achieving 20 or more kills for the third time this season. The junior finished one dig shy of a double-double, tallying nine on the afternoon.
Enjoying a stellar performance on the defensive end was Peyton Dueck, racking up a season-high 25 digs at the libero position. The Aptos, Calif. native also handed out six assists. Setter Audrey Pak collected 35 assists and got involved in two blocks.
Freshman Kiki Horne contributed 10 kills, three blocks, and three digs.
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the match after Leverette's brilliance led them to the 25-23 victory in the opening set. The teams were never separated by more than four points in the back-and-forth frame. With the score tied at 17-17, Horne delivered three important swings and Leilani Dodson dealt a crucial service ace to give UCLA a four-point cushion. Oregon whittled the lead to one, but the Bruins โ backed by their energetic home crowd, held on to take set one.
Leverette stayed hot in the second frame, registering seven kills to help UCLA take an early lead. However, the Bruins faltered with seven attack errors and four service line misfires, allowing the Ducks to seize control and win the set 25-20, leveling the match at 1-1.
UCLA's struggles continued in the third set, where they hit just .081 due to eight attack errors.
In a nail-biting final frame featuring eight ties and four lead changes, Oregon's outside hitters provided 19 kills to secure a 25-22 win and clinch the match.
UCLA's hopes for an NCAA Tournament bid now rest in the hands of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee. The selection show will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. (PT) on ESPN.
