UCLA Falls to Maryland in Four Sets
November 09, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. โ The UCLA women's volleyball team suffered a four-set defeat to Maryland on Saturday night inside the XFINITY Center.
ย
Set scores were 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-27.
ย
UCLA (11-12, 5-9) had three players reach double figures in kills. Junior Cheridyn Leverette led the team with 16 kills. Leilani Dodson recorded a season-high 15 kills with an impressive .483 hitting percentage, while Anna Dodson delivered her best performance since early October, contributing 14 kills.
ย
Maryland (12-13, 3-11) earned its third Big Ten win of the season behind Samantha Schnitta's match-high 22 kills at a hitting percentage of .356. She also tallied nine digs, six blocks, and three service aces. Sam Csire also reached double-digits in her 14-kill display. On the defensive end, Anastasia Russ racked up seven blocks.
ย
Setter Audrey Pak dished out 44 assists and, for the second consecutive match, came just one dig short of a double-double, finishing with nine.
ย
Despite Leverette's strong start to the contest that featured six early kills, the hosts gained the lead after its 25-20 opening set victory. The Terrapins limited themselves to just two attack errors and came up with four blocks on the defensive side. L. Dodson contributed four kills for the Bruins, but the team struggled to find their rhythm, hampered by five attack errors and four misfires from the service line.
ย
UCLA regrouped and won six consecutive points to start the second set with Kat Lutz holding the service line. Receiving majority of the swings was L. Dodson, who fueled the scoring run with three kills. The Northwestern transfer finished the frame with seven kills and ascended into double-digits for the match. Maryland clawed back into the set with a 9-2 run to snatch the lead, 16-15.
ย
The Bruins turned to L. Dodson, who tallied her sixth kill of the frame, for the much-needed side out to level the score at 16-16. Kiki Horne came up with a momentum-shifting block before L. Dodson knocked down yet another kill to restore UCLA's advantage. Sealing the win was A. Dodson, recording five kills in the closing stages to give the Bruins the cushion they needed to secure the 25-23 set win and level the match. UCLA was much more efficient, hitting .359 in set two behind
ย
The third set saw a back-and-forth battle until Maryland's decisive 6-0 run turned a 17-16 deficit into a five-point lead. The hosts held firm for a 25-21 win, taking the lead into the fourth set.
ย
UCLA established a 6-2 advantage in the early stages of the fourth set. Maryland answered by winning seven of the next 10 points to lead 9-8. Another surge from the Terrapins made it an 18-12 lead. The Bruins slowly gained ground in the attempt to complete the comeback, but despite fighting off three set points, the hosts came away with the 27-25 victory to clinch the match.

UCLA will return to Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Washington. The match will be available for viewing on B1G+.
