MVB Tops Trojans in Straight Sets

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team (13-4, 4-1) recorded its seventh .400-plus attack percentage of the season while posting a sweep of No. 11 USC (10-7, 2-3) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match held at the Galen Center on Thursday night. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-10, 25-14.
The Bruins outhit the Trojans .492 to .054 (an opponent season low mark) on the night. Ethan Champlin led UCLA with 10 kills while hitting .400. Cooper Robinson added nine more spikes and hit .467. The teams will battle it out again on Saturday at 5 p.m. in UCLA's Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Members of the UCLA 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 NCAA men's volleyball national championship teams will be recognized at the match.
UCLA moved out to an 8-4 lead to begin set one. The run featured aces by Andrew Rowan and Merrick McHenry along with two kills from Grant Sloane. A Robinson kill made it 10-6. USC tallied the next three before a Sloane swing ended the run. McHenry's kill pushed the margin to 15-13. A pair of Sean McQuiggan spikes put UCLA up 18-15 and then 20-16. Zach Rama made it 22-18 with a kill. A Trojan service error and attack error gave UCLA set point 24-20. A back row blocker call produced the win at 25-20. Matthew Aziz was credited with 8 digs during the set after starting at libero.
A block by McHenry/Robinson triggered a 6-4 run for the Bruins to start set two. McHenry then stepped to the line for an 7-0 service run. Champlin registered a couple of kills during the stretch and McQuiggan added a block solo for the Bruins who built a 12-4 lead. A block by Rowan, McQuiggan and Champlin made it 15-6. A McHenry swing put the lead at 19-9. Robinson added a kill for 21-10 and then finished off the set with three straight aces. UCLA hit .824 for the set on 14 kills, no errors and 17 swings. USC was at -.111 for the frame.

A Rowan tip and Trojan attack error put UCLA up 16-10. Another McHenry kill pushed the lead to 19-12 and was followed by a Champlin/McQuiggan block. Sloane's ace gave UCLA set point at 24-14. A Trojan attack error ended the match.
