UCLA Takes Down Wildcats on Arizona’s Senior Night
March 02, 2024 | Women's Basketball
TUCSON, Ariz. – UCLA Women's Basketball concluded the final game of the last Pac-12 Conference regular season with a 61-41 victory at Arizona Saturday. The Bruins finish their 2023-24 regular season with a 24-5 (13-5 Pac-12) record.
Sophomore Lauren Betts posted her second-consecutive double-double; Betts last had back-to-back double-doubles on Dec. 10 (vs. then-No. 20 Florida State) and Dec. 18 (at then-No. 13 Ohio State). The center scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and wrangled 12 rebounds in the McKale Center on the way to Saturday's victory.
The Bruins dominated the battle on the boards, outpacing the Wildcats 43-17 in the rebounding category. Staunch defense led to 36 boards by the Bruins on 43 missed shots from Arizona.
Three UCLA sophomores finished in double-digits; Londynn Jones led the Bruins with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting (4-7 3FG). Gabriela Jaquez matched Betts' 11-point scoring output with 11 of her own. Jaquez was relentless at the rim, finishing five of her six attempts inside the arc.
The Bruins came out of the gates on a mission, shooting 4-for-4 to start the game. The four-consecutive made shots forced a Wildcat timeout and UCLA led 9-0 at the media break. Four Bruins got on the board during the run, which was only disrupted by a pair of turnovers by the Bruins.
Jones hit UCLA's first and only three of the first half with a defender failing to properly close out on the shooting guard.
UCLA held Arizona scoreless until there was 4:50 left on the clock. Kiki Rice and Betts both went without a miss through the first 10 minutes, and both tallied six points apiece. The Bruins shot a scorching 9-of-14 in the period.
Senior Angela Dugalic got things working in the second, scoring four of UCLA's first five points. The Bruin forward grabbed an offensive board and laid it back in after a missed three-point attempt by the Bruins.
Jaquez provided key energy off the bench; she managed to beat the buzzer off a baseline out-of-bounds play when only two seconds remained on the shot clock. The Camarillo, Calif., native went down court and blocked Breya Cunningham from behind on the following defensive possession.
Turnovers plagued the Bruins in the first half; UCLA coughed up the ball 14 times before the mid-game break. The Bruins were averaging 14.5 turnovers per game prior to Saturday's Pac-12 finale. Despite turnover trouble, UCLA led by 15 at the half.
Jones hit a three to start the quarter and followed it up later with another. Jaquez attacked the basket repeatedly with no hope of the Wildcats stopping her; the sophomore shot 3-for-3 in the quarter and added a pair of boards in the third.
UCLA extended its lead to 23 heading into the final frame.
Jones started the final period as she did the third, knocking down a long-distance jumper. Lina Sontag opted to reject an open three to find Jones, who leads the Conference in three-pointers made this season.
Sontag was the only other Bruin to score other than Jones; the sophomore duo scored 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting. UCLA held Arizona to 13 points in the fourth. The Bruins held their opponent under 60 points for the fifth-consecutive game.
