The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (18-4, 7-1) swept past No. 6 Stanford (9-11, 2-6) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match on Saturday evening in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the match were 25-17, 25-22, 25-20. It marked the Bruins' seventh straight win on the season, extending its longest streak of the year.
Ethan Champlin recorded a team-high 13 kills on the night for his team-leading 11th double-digit kill performance of the season. Grant Sloane supplied 10 more kills while hitting .600 from his opposite position and added an ace (two) for the sixth straight match. Merrick McHenry chipped in with seven kills and had no errors to hit above .400 for the 19th straight contest. Sean McQuiggan posted seven kills and tied his career-high with two aces. Andrew Rowan set the Bruins to a .463 percentage as UCLA registered above .400 on attack for the ninth time this year.
UCLA went up 7-6 early in set one after a kill by Sloane who finished with six in the frame. However, Stanford rebounded to go in front 9-10. McHenry's swing evened the score and was followed by another Sloane spike plus a Cardinal error to put UCLA ahead 12-10. A McQuiggan kill and a Sloane ace opened up a 16-11 lead. Champlin's back row smash put UCLA in charge 18-13. A block by Sloane/McHenry/Cooper Robinson upped the margin to 20-14. Robinson's swing and ace handed the Bruins a 23-15 margin. Two more kills by Champlin, his fourth and fifth of the set, ended the initial frame with a 25-17 win. The Bruins hit .600 for the set.
Stanford moved to a 6-8 advantage to begin set two. A McQuiggan kill and a Cardinal error evened the score at 11-all. The score was then tied up at points 13 through 16. Two straight Cardinal attack errors and a Champlin killed pushed UCLA in front 19-16. Robinson followed with an ace for a four-point edge. Stanford rallied to narrow their deficit to one, at 21-20. Champlin's ace took UCLA to set point at 24-21 and Sloane followed with a kill for a 25-22 win.
Three kills by Champlin and his early service run helped UCLA to an 8-5 lead in set three. Stanford closed to 9-8 following an ace serve. A series of service errors by both squads left the Bruins in front 12-10. Stanford tallied the next two points to even the tally. The score was then level at points 13 through 15. Zach Rama's spike was followed by a pair of aces by McQuiggan to open up an 18-15 advantage. Another kill by Rama forced a Cardinal timeout at 19-15. Stanford answered with the next three points to reduce the margin to 19-18. Two McHenry kills put UCLA ahead 21-19, and then 22-20, before he stepped to the service line to deliver three straight aces to end the match at 25-20.
The Bruins will square off with MPSF-leading Grand Canyon (8-0) for a pair of matches next week --- Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. Both contests will be held in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
