Freshmen Shine for Bruins at Arizona State

Tempe, Ariz. – UCLA's freshmen came through with strong performances on all events, but the Bruins had to count a fall on balance beam and were overtaken on the final routine, losing to Arizona State, 196.625-196.325.
Freshman Katelyn Rosen won the all-around with a 39.450 and vault with a 9.9. Alex Irvine won uneven bars with a career-high 9.9 and tied for fifth on vault with a career-high-tying 9.85. She also performed a strong exhibition beam routine that scored 9.825. Paige Anastasi stuck her Yurchenko layout full vault for a career-high 9.85 and hit a 9.825 in her exhibition debut on floor.
Graduate student Nya Reed was UCLA's other event winner, as she won floor exercise for the second consecutive meet with a 9.95.
The Bruins and Sun Devils were tied after the first rotation, which each team scoring 49.150 on uneven bars and vault, respectively. Irvine led the Bruin charge with her 9.9, and Rosen and Margzetta Frazier each added 9.85. Emily Lee, competing on bars for just the second time this season, contributed a season-high 9.775.
Anastasi's stuck vault in the leadoff position set the tone for the Bruins in rotation two, and they took the lead after scoring 49.350 on the event. Rosen's 9.9 led the field, and Lee and Chae Campbell contributed 9.875s. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, scored 49.15 on bars, falling behind the Bruins by two-tenths, 98.500-98.300.
UCLA's 49.375 on floor exercise in the third rotation gave the Bruins more buffer. The Bruin's back three each scored 9.9 or higher, with Rosen going 9.9, Brooklyn Moors hitting 9.925 and Reed scoring 9.95. Lee led off the rotation with a 9.85. After ASU's 49.025 on beam, UCLA led with one event to go, 147.875-147.325.
The Bruins started beam strong with a leadoff 9.875 from Lee, a 9.8 from Rosen and a career-high-tying 9.9 from Emma Andres but did not end strong, counting a 9.675 in the four spot and a fall in both the five and six spots. Arizona State's final competitor, Hannah Scharf, clinched the win for the Sun Devils with a 9.925.
UCLA will close the regular season at home on Saturday, March 16 against Clemson on Senior Day at 2pm.
