Third Sets Carry Men's Tennis Past No. 19 Stanford

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA men's tennis team overcame a 3-1 deficit, earning three three-set wins to defeat No. 19 Stanford 4-3 in Pac-12 action Friday at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Jorge Plans Gonzalez secured the final point, unleashing a pack of Bruins to congratulate him on Court 6. Alexander Hoogmartens and Spencer Johnson also prevailed for UCLA (11-6, 3-2 Pac-12), which collected the doubles point to start action. The Cardinal (13-5, 5-1) comeback charge came from Nishesh Basavareddy, Max Basing and Neel Rajesh, but was ultimately stopped short.

The 42nd-ranked pair of Basing and Nico Godsick gave Stanford the early edge in doubles play, beating Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli 6-2. Hoogmartens and Govind Nanda answered for the Bruins on Court 3, breaking the first and last serves of Aryan Chaudhary and Harsh Hemang Parikh for a 6-3 victory.
On Court 3, serves were held until the tiebreaker. Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels seized the initial four points and six of seven, eventually winning 7-2.
The Cardinal made a statement to start singles play, taking five first sets. Three straight-set triumphs followed, starting with No. 23 Basavareddy's 6-2, 6-2 result over No. 26 Nanda up top. Rajesh followed suit, besting Gianluca Ballotta 7-5, 6-3 on Court 5. Finally, Basing downed Revelli 7-5, 6-3 to put the UCLA on the brink of defeat.
Third sets were added to the scoreboard for Courts 2, 4 and 6. Each of the first two came thanks to a Bruin response. Hoogmartens soon completed his comeback on 4 with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision over Kyle Kang. Hoogmartens is now a winner of five contests in a row dating back to UCLA's March 17 victory against No. 10 Harvard.
A tiebreaker was needed to decide Court 2, where Johnson would continue his hot streak versus nationally-ranked foes. This time, it was No. 47 Banerjee who Johnson dispatched, sealing his 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) win with an ace. Since March 13, Johnson is 6-0 in singles play โ including a 5-0 mark opposite ranked players.
Fans rushed to the balcony and stairwell overlooking Court 6, where Plans Gonzalez led 4-2. Hudson Rivera held for the ensuing game, but Plans Gonzalez controlled the rest of the match and finished with a break.
The Bruins will try for their fifth victory in a row Sunday, when California comes to LATC. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
