No. 2 UCLA Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

GULF SHORES, Ala.ย -- No. 2 UCLA (33-6) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship with a 3-0 victory over 20th-ranked and 15th-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (28-10) on Friday afternoon at Gulfย Beach Place. The Bruins improved to 3-0ย all-time in the series against the Islanders.
UCLA's pair of redshirt freshman Kenzie Brower and junior Jessie Smith put the Bruins up 1-0 with a straight-set win on court three over Hannah Doyle and Stephaie Young, 21-14, 21-13. Brower, playing in her first-ever NCAA tournament match, hit an incredible .800 (17 kills, one error, 20 attempts) to go with an identical 17 digs and a pair of blocks. Smith had 15 kills and a match-high 27 digs.
The Bruins went up 2-0 after graduate student Lexy Denaburg and sophomore Maggie Boyd posted a straight-set win on court one over the Islanders' Cassie Dodd and Chloe Tome, 21-16, 24-22. The pair did a great job of siding out as Texas A&M-CC only had two digs combined for both players over the course of the two sets. Denaburgย hit .765 (15 kills, two errors, 17 attempts) to go with four digs, three blocks, and two aces. Boyd hit .760 (21 kills, two errors, 25 total attempts) and added nine digs, one ace, and one block.
Redshirt freshman Ensley Alden and junior Natalie Myszkowski clinched the 3-0 win for the Bruins on court five, taking down Elizabeth Cortez and Kela Moreno, 21-15, 21-17. Playing in her first-ever NCAA Championship dual, Alden recorded a match-high 17 kills and 11 digs to go with two aces and one block. Myszkowski hit a match-high .556 (14 kills, four errors, 18 attempts) to go with six digs.
Both Bruin pairs on courts two and four dropped the first set but rallied to win the second, forcing a third and deciding set when the match was called.
UP NEXT: The Bruins will face No. 7 California in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CT/9:00 a.m. PT. The Golden Bears (20-13) advanced with a 3-1 win over No. 10 Long Beach State in the opening round.ย UCLA already has two wins over California this season and is 16-0 all-time in the series history.
