Women's Water Polo
The U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team (currently tied for first place in Group B) closed out pool play with a dominant 17-5 win over France to improve to 3-1 at the Olympic Games on Friday, August 2. Team USA was led by a game-high four goals from UCLA's Maddie Musselman, as she nearly outscored the hosts all by herself. She added one rebound and one steal in the win. The Bruins' Rachel Fattal also added two goals and a field block while winning all four sprints. Tara Prentice also contributed one goal in the contest. Team USA led 3-1 at the end of the first and built a 7-3 lead heading into the break. Then the U.S. piled on six goals in the third quarter to jump out to a 13-5 lead. Team USA would score four more goals in the fourth period while pitching a shutout on defense to provide the 17-5 final. The USA Women now await their seeding and opponent for the quarterfinals, which will be determined after all of the pool play games are concluded on Sunday, Aug. 4.
Australia (first place in Group A) improved to 3-0 in pool play in Paris with a 10-7 win over Canada on Friday. Both Bruins played and factored heavily in the win for the Aussie Stingers. UCLA's Bronte Halligan was the star of the game, tying for game-high honors with a hat trick, and had more steals (five) than all of Canada (four). She also won two sprints and had one rebound and one field block. The Bruins' Sienna Green also scored one goal (the first of the game) on her only shot and the only score for the Aussies in the opening period as the two teams were tied at 1-1 at the end of one. Australia built a 4-2 lead by halftime and then exploded for a 9-4 lead heading into the final stanza. Canada won the fourth quarter, 3-1, to provide the 10-7 final. Australia will conclude pool play on Sunday, Aug. 4, when they take on Hungary (2-1) at 2:00 p.m. local time/5:00 a.m. PT. The match will stream on Peacock.

Team USA and UCLA head coach John Speraw and former student-athletes Micah Ma'a and Garrett Muagututia finished top of Pool C by defeating Japan 3-1 on Friday afternoon. With the win Team USA finished a perfect 3-0 in pool play to advance to the quarterfinal round. The U.S. opened the match by winning the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18 before Japan bounced back. Japan took the third set 25-18, before the U.S. clinched the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
