Bruins Beat BYU, 1-0

LOS ANGELES โ No. 3 UCLA battled to a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 16 BYU on Wednesday night, with graduate student Meg Boade's sixth-minute goal proving to be the difference in the game.

The victory was UCLA's fifth consecutive shutout to start the season, one away from the school record set by the 2014 team. Goalkeeper Ryan Campbell made a season-high three saves on nine BYU shots. The Bruins totaled 14 shots in the game, with BYU goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez making seven saves.

Boade put the Bruins on the board early off a set piece. Lilly Reale's corner kick was sent over to Jayden Perry on the far post. Perry headed the ball towards the front of goal, and Boade was there to poke it in for her first goal as a Bruin.
The Bruins (5-0) had a few chances to build on the lead in the first half with 10 shots in the period. In the 28th minute, Maya Evans sent a flick to Jordan Geis on the left side. Geis burst ahead and got off a shot from just outside the box. Hernaez made the save and then handled the rebound just before Lily Boyden could put a foot on it. Ten minutes later, UCLA nearly had another goal off a corner, as Alice Barbieri's shot was saved, and Nicki Fraser's shot off the rebound was cleared of the line. In the final minutes of the half, Taylor Cheatham's shot in front of the goal was saved.

BYU (1-1-2) was more aggressive in the second half, trying to equalize, but the Bruin defense kept the Cougars in check and off the scoreboard. The Cougars' final chance to tie came in the 86th minute, but Lucy Kessler's shot missed high.
