LOS ANGELES --ย Top-ranked UCLA (6-0) won its 31st consecutive regular season game with a 19-8 blowout win in its home opener against No. 20 California Baptist University (1-4) on Saturday afternoonย at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. UCLA improved to 14-0 all-time against the Lancers.

A season-high 14 different Bruins scored in the contest, paced by the first hat trick of the year for freshman Bode Brinkema, who scored four points (added one assist). Three other Bruins scored multiple goals, with freshman Ryder Dodd and both graduate transfers, Aaron Voggenthaler and Nico Tierney, scoring two goals apiece.

Graduate student Garret Griggsย got the start in the cage and played the first half, tallying five saves and one steal while surrendering six goals. Redshirt freshman Nate Tauscher played the entire second half and registered a season-high eight saves to go with one steal while giving up two goals in the fourth quarter.

The Bruins led 5-3 at the end of the first period. Voggenthaler opened the scoring (6:54) and after CBU tied it, sophomore Ben Liechty scored (4:15) off a feed from super senior Jack Larsen to put UCLA up 2-1. Redshirt freshman Max Matthews put the Bruins up 3-1 on a feed from Ben Liechty (3:40). CBU would pull to within one (3:09), but Tierney scored off a pass from redshirt junior Trey Doten (2:03) to make it 4-2. Ryder Dodd scored his first of the game on a power play (0:49) and then CBU converted a penalty shot (0:38) to end the scoring with the Bruins leading 5-3.

The Bruins dominated the second quarter, 9-3, to take a 14-6 lead into the break. UCLA scored the first five goals of the second period, starting with Ryder Dodd's second goal of the game on a power play off a feed from redshirt junior Chase Dodd (7:23). Redshirt sophomore Ben Larsen made it 7-3 with a power play strike off an assist from Ben Liechty (6:09). Voggenthaler's second of the game (5:41) was followed up by back-to-back goals from Brinkema (5:21 and 4:27) to stretch the lead to 10-3. After the Lancers scored, UCLA answered back with three more goals, the first of which was the only score of the game for freshman Peter Castillo (2:40) on a power play and assist from super senior Makoto Kenney. Kenney would then score off a feed from sophomore Wade Sherlock (2:14) and Tierney would convert a penalty for his second of the game that was drawn by Eli Liechty (1:22) to put UCLA up 13-4. CBU scored with 0:56 left and then Eli Liechty scored a goal off a pass from Brinkema (0:37). The Lancers scored the final goal of the first half (0:19) to trim the Bruins' lead to 14-6.

UCLA won the third period, 2-0, to build a 16-6 lead heading in the final stanza. Jack Larsen scored a power play goal on the first possession off a feed from Ben Liechty to extend the lead to 15-6. Then Sherlock scored his only goal of the game from the front court (1:35) with Tierney being credited for the assist to end the scoring in a defensive-minded third period.

The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 3-2, to provide the 19-8 final. CBU opened the scoring in the fourth (7:08), but Doten scored his only goal of the contest from the front court (4:19) to make it 17-7. After a score by the Lancers (3:25), junior Noah Rowe got in on the scoring (2:25) off a feed from Voggenthaler. Brinkema then completed his hat trick when he converted a penalty shot that was drawn by Eli Liechty (1:43) to end the scoring for the game.

UP NEXT: The Bruins will head to Berkeley, Calif., to compete in the MPSF Invitationalย at Spieker Aquatics Complex from Sept. 20-22. The field will be announced early in the week.
