UCLA Wins Big Ten Opener, 2-1, at Oregon
September 14, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Eugene, Ore. – No. 22 UCLA rallied late to defeat Oregon, 2-1, in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams. Sunshine Fontes and Jordan Geis scored in the 80th and 83rd minutes, respectively, to give the Bruins the victory.
Oregon (4-4, 0-1 in the Big Ten) broke the scoreless tie in the 77th minute on a counterattack. After Lauren Kenny's shot was saved by Bruin goalkeeper Ryan Campbell, Taylor Bryan pounced on the rebound and scored the go-ahead goal for the host Ducks.
Oregon's lead was short-lived, however. In the 80th minute, Geis was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick. Fontes, who was making her 2024 season debut after missing the second half of the 2023 season with a knee injury, stepped up to take the penalty kick and scored the equalizer.
At 82:54, Geis came through with the go-ahead goal, taking a pass from Taylor Cheatham and scoring past Oregon goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg for her first collegiate goal.
UCLA (6-2-1, 1-0) held a large advantage in shots, outshooting the Ducks, 33-8, but had 11 shots saved by Goldberg. Campbell recorded two saves.
The Bruins resume conference play on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Indiana.
