Bruins End Road Trip with 2-0 Shutout Win at Purdue
September 22, 2024 | Women's Soccer
West Lafayette, Ind. โ After a scoreless first half, UCLA scored two goals three minutes apart to defeat Purdue, 2-0. Sofia Cook scored her second game-winner in as many games with her 57th minute goal, and Bridgette Marin-Valencia hit a long-distance screamer in the 60th minute to help the Bruins close their extended road trip with another shutout.
ย
The first half saw just one shot on goal between the two teams. Meg Boade's sharp-angled shot in the eighth minute beat Purdue goalkeeper Emily Edwards, but Boilermaker defender Sydney Boudreau was there to clear the ball off the line. The Bruin defense also had an important stop of its own late in the first half, as Lilly Reale dispossessed the Boilermakers on a counterattack.
ย
The Bruins came out firing in the second half, taking four shots in the first 10 minutes, and they broke through at 56:59 after earning a corner kick. Quincy McMahon sent a quick short corner to Cook, who got free from a defender and then fired far post for her third goal of the season.
Another corner kick led to the Bruins' second goal. After service was cleared out by the Boilermakers, Marin-Valencia collected the ball 30 yards away and banged a left-footed shot Edwards to the upper left corner for her third goal. ย ย ย
UCLA (8-2-1, 3-0-0 in the Big Ten) finished the game with 15 shots and held Purdue (5-4-1, 1-2-0) to five shots, including just two in the second half. The Bruin defense did not allow a single shot on goal and recorded the team's eighth shutout of the year.
ย
After playing six consecutive games on the road, UCLA returns home for a two-game homestand against Wisconsin on Thursday, Sept. 26 and Minnesota on Sunday, Sept. 29. A 2 for $20 ticket offer for Thursday's B1G Opener can be purchased online at uclabruins.com/tickets.
