Women's Soccer Defeats Minnesota, 3-1

September 29, 2024 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES - After playing to a 0-0 tie in its last game, UCLA came out hungry against Minnesota and scored three goals in a 3-1 victory over the Golden Gophers Sunday. Junior Bridgette Marin-Valencia opened the scoring with her team-leading fourth goal of the year, and freshman Paloma Daubert and senior Quincy McMahon netted their first goals of the season. Graduate midfielder Sunshine Fontes recorded two assists.

UCLA (9-2-2, 4-0-1) got the scoring started in the 34th minute after Val Vargas earned a corner kick. Off the short corner, McMahon passed into the center to Marin-Valencia, who weaved around defenders to the left side of the box before firing off a right-footed shot to the far post. Marin-Valencia's shot was well beyond the reach of Minnesota goalkeeper Sarah Martin, giving UCLA the 1-0 lead.
The Bruins maintained the 1-0 lead at the break, but 15 minutes into the second half, the Gophers tied it up after Paige Kalal sent a long free kick into the box that deflected right to Kate Childers, who one-timed it past UCLA goalkeeper Ryan Campbell for the equalizer.

Ten minutes later, however, the Bruins answered back, with Fontes sending a pass through to Daubert, who controlled with her left foot and raced ahead of her defender before shooting right-footed between an onrushing Martin's legs for her first collegiate goal.
Fontes also helped set up UCLA's third goal in the 81st minute, sending a pass from the back to Maya Evans at midfield. Evans lofted a shot down the field to McMahon, who took it towards goal, beating two Minnesota defenders and then Martin for her first goal of the 2024 campaign.
UCLA's defense shut down Minnesota forward Khyah Harper, who entered the game leading the nation in goals scored with 13. The Bruins limited her to three shots, none on goal. The Gophers totaled nine shot on the day and just two shots on goal. The Bruins recorded 17 shots, 10 on goal. Campbell had one save for UCLA, and Martin had seven for Minnesota.

The Bruins are tied for first in the Big Ten with a 4-0-1 conference record. Minnesota drops to 8-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the Big Ten. UCLA will next host Washington Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7pm. UCLA's senior class will be honored in pregame festivities.
