Bruins Fall to No. 17 Tennessee
September 05, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. โ Junior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette paced her team's attack with a team-high 13 kills in UCLA's first defeat of the season, falling in straight sets to No. 17 Tennessee on Thursday night inside the Food City Center.
ย
Set scores were 15-25, 24-26, 25-27.
ย
The Bruins (2-1) were unable to match up to the firepower of the Lady Volunteers (1-2), who hit .324 in the match and saw three players reach double-digit kill tallies. Tennessee's Nina Cajic led all players with 14 kills, while Hayden Kubik and Paityn Chapman also finished in double figures with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
ย
Leverette continued her impressive form to start the season with 13 kills at a .267 clip. The Hampton, Ga. native recorded 15.5 points, the most by a Bruin this season. Freshman outside hitter Kiki Horne made it three straight games with 10 or more kills, collecting 11 while posting a hitting percentage of .205.
ย
Senior libero Peyton Dueck etched her name in the record books with her 1,000th career dig in the first set. She racked up 467 digs during her one season at Cal Poly and has now tallied 540 during her three years as a Bruin to bring her total to 1,007. Dueck snuffed out nine digs and dished out three assists in the match.
ย
Tennessee set the tone in the opening set by posting a 5-1 scoring run to start the contest. UCLA was unable to find rhythm in the frame, hitting just .143 despite Leverette's hot start that featured five kills. After building a 17-11 advantage, the hosts closed the set with a 12-4 run to cruise to the first-set victory.
ย
Alfee Reft's squad started to gel in the second set, hitting an extremely efficient .349. Graduate setter Audrey Pakโwho matched her career-high of five killsโcame up with back-to-back dump kills to get her team back on track. Also catching fire in the second frame was Horne, who strung together three consecutive kills. Leverette then got in on the action, putting down three straight kills of her own to whittle the deficit to just one point (20-19). UCLA fought off a match point in the hotly contested set, but Tennessee eventually prevailed 26-24. This was the first of two deuce sets in the match.
ย
The Bruins earned their first lead after storming to a 4-0 advantage early in set three. Tennessee regrouped and evened it up at 7-7, and later took the lead after a late three-point run. UCLA stayed within striking distance when kills from junior outside hitter Grayce Olson and redshirt freshman middle blocker Brooklyn Briscoe sparked a 3-0 run to make the score 21-21. The Lady Volunteers rallied to make it match point once again, but back-to-back kills from Horne gave UCLA set point and a chance to extend the match. The hosts managed to take the next three points and clinch victory, 27-25.
The Bruins will look to return to their winning ways on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 9 a.m. (PT) when they take on Long Island. The match will not be streamed, but fans can follow live stats at uclalivestats.com.
