No. 1 UCLA Sweeps No. 14 Penn State

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 1 UCLA men's volleyball program earned a 3-0 win over No. 14 Penn State in the first match of the First Point Collegiate Challenge on Friday afternoon. Set scores for the afternoon were 25-15, 25-21 and 25-23.
Zach Rama had the most kills of any Bruin on the day with nine, and also led the squad in digs with five to go along with three blocks.
The Bruins' defense came up big multiple times en route to 18 block assists on the day. Matthew Edwards and Cameron Thorne led the Bruins with four block assists each on the afternoon. The Bruins (2-0) finished the day with five aces as a team, while Penn State (0-3) had just eight block assists on the day.
Andrew Rowan put up 21 assists on the afternoon while Rama led the way with 12 points and Ido David added another 7.5 points.
In the first set the Bruins won it handily, 25-15, Thorne, David, and Edwards tallied two kills, while Rama added an ace in the set win.
After winning the first set the Bruins trailed 7-5 in the second set before earning 10 of the next 16 points to take a 15-13 lead midway through the second set.
Later on in the set the Bruins utilized a 4-0 scoring run to take a 22-16 lead courtesy of an ace from Kahale Clini followed by a Rama set to Robinson who finished off the point to take the four-point lead.
UCLA earned the second set a few points later, with Rowan setting up Rama for his fifth kill of the afternoon to earn the set two win 25-21.
As for the third set the Bruins and Nittany Lions traded points early on before Penn State went on a run to force a UCLA timeout at 8-6.
Ido David then went on a solo run, converting two aces in a row to put the Bruins on top in the third set 11-10.
Penn State clawed their way back into the set and tied it at 17-17 before the Bruins forced an error from Penn State to take an 18-17 lead. However, Penn State continued to fight and each time to Bruins took a one-point lead the Nittany Lions would earn a point to tie the set.
With Penn State up 23-22 the Bruins earned back-to-back points to make it match point Bruins. Rowan set up Rama for his eighth kill of the afternoon before Thorne came up with his fourth block assist of the day to put the Bruins at match point. Rowan then set up Rama again to earn the set win 25-23 and a 3-0 sweep for the Bruins.
