Bruins in Super Bowl LIX

January 29, 2025 | Football

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles will meet Feb. 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. The UCLA football program will be represented on both sidelines, as wide receiver Kyle Philips (Philadelphia) and fullback Carson Steele (Kansas City) are members of the conference-champion organizations. Philips is currently on the Eagles' practice squad, while Steele has been on the Chiefs' active roster since opening night of the season.

Bruins Steele, Alec Anderson (Buffalo Bills) and Colson Yankoff (Washington Commanders) all played during the NFL playoff conference-championship round. Steele and tackle Anderson each saw snaps on both offense and special teams, while Yankoff was a special-teams contributor. Yankoff contributed to a punt-return tackle in Washington's loss.

Across 17 games, the rookie Steele has rushed 56 times for 183 yards (3.3 yards per carry). He has also caught seven passes for 26 yards (3.7 yards per catch) and returned five kickoffs for 138 yards (27.6 yards per return). In Week 3 at Atlanta, Steele registered career highs of 17 carries for 72 yards (4.2). During the 2023 season, his lone campaign at UCLA, he led the Bruins with 167 rushing attempts and 847 ground yards (5.1). Steele also had 17 catches for 163 yards (9.6). He found the end zone a total of eight times (six rushing, two receiving). Before becoming a Bruin, Steele spent two years at Ball State.

Philips started his third NFL season with the Tennessee Titans, logging three catches for 18 yards (6.0) in their opener. After being waived with an injury designation after Week 3, he caught on with the Eagles. Philips was at UCLA from 2018-2021 and left the program fourth on its all-time receptions list with 163 for 1.821 yards (11.2). He had 17 career touchdown catches, including a conference-leading 10 in 2021.

Prior to Super Bowl LVIII, FOX College Football reported UCLA ranked fifth among all programs in Super Bowl appearances with 114 players having seen action at the time. Last year, Jake Brendel started at center for the San Francisco 49ers in their overtime loss to Kansas City.
