Bruins Down Indiana in Assembly Hall, 73-62

January 04, 2025 | Women's Basketball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No.1-ranked UCLA Women's basketball team (15-0, 4-0 Big Ten) picked up its fifteenth win of the season against Indiana at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Saturday morning. The final score was 73-62 in the Bruins' first Big Ten road game and marked the Bruins' best start to a season since 2019-2020.

Junior Lauren Betts added the ninth double-double to her dominant season, finishing with 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bruins over the Hoosiers (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten). Juniors Kiki Rice and Gabriela Jaquez each finished in double digits. Rice scored 12 points alongside seven rebounds and seven assists, and Jaquez added 11.

UCLA outscored Indiana 40-28 in the paint while outrebounding the team 40-31. UCLA also found success when distributing the ball, finishing the game with 18 total assists.

The Bruins found offensive success in the first quarter before allowing a 9-0 run by the Hoosiers. Betts started scoring efficiently early in the game, scoring her first field goal in the first 20 seconds and finishing the first with six points on 3-3 shooting. She also contributed a block and a steal in the frame. Janiah Barker added three points off of a make from deep and Timea Gardiner added three with perfect shooting from the free throw line.

UCLA extended its lead and held Indiana to only two made field goals in the second quarter, going into halftime up 33-21. The team's lock-down defense was due in part to forcing 11 turnovers in the half, including a steal by Londynn Jones in the second quarter that led to a three-point play by Jaquez. Rice led the quarter in scoring with four points as well as two rebounds and two assists.

The Hoosiers had a strong comeback attempt in the third quarter, but ultimately, the Bruins' effort on both ends of the floor maintained their double-digit advantage. Betts led the team with eight points and five rebounds in the period, achieving her ninth double-double of the season in only three quarters. She also picked up three assists in the third frame, including a dime to Gardiner that gave her a wide-open layup. Rice finished the quarter with three points and three assists, and the Bruins entered the final frame up 56-44.

UCLA had some struggles in the fourth quarter, getting outscored by Indiana 18-17, but ultimately finished the game on top. Betts contributed eight points on 4-5 shooting in the quarter, and Rice contributed five points alongside three rebounds and two assists. Jones also laced a three-pointer and added a block to contribute to the Bruins' fifteenth-consecutive win this season and their fourth-consecutive conference victory.
