Bruins Take Down Penn State, 2-0
October 10, 2025 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer program earned a 2-0 win over Penn State on Friday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Sergi Solans Ormo and Oliver Roche scored the goals for the Bruins.
With the 2-0 win the Bruins (3-5-3, 3-2-1 Big Ten) earned their second consecutive clean sheet, and limited Penn State (5-5-1, 1-3-1 Big Ten) to five attempts on goal.
UCLA kicked off the game in the 14th minute with Solans Ormo scoring heading home the go-ahead goal after some nice build up from Schinieder Mimy and Ander Marticorena. Marticornea picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box before flicking the ball over a defender to Mimy, who then sent in a cross that Solans Ormo headed home, putting the Bruins up 1-0.
The goal was Solans Ormo's fourth goal of the season, which leads the squad.
Neither side could get a goal in the remainder of the first half, despite the Bruins having multiple good looks at goal. Marticorena fired into the side netting in the 22nd minute of action, while Zach Mastrodimos, who was making his first start of the 2025 season, forced a save out of Jonathan Evans in the 25th minute.
At the other end, Kevin Box made his second consecutive start in goal for the Bruins, and made two huge saves back-to-back in the 32nd minute, preserving UCLA's 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
After the halftime break, the Bruins continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded 20 minutes in to the second half.
In the 63rd minute, Nixon broke away up the middle before laying the ball off to winger Philip Naef. Naef then fired a cross into the box where substitute Oliver Roche latched on to it. Roche then controlled the ball perfectly with his right foot before knocking the ball into the left side of the goal to put the Bruins up 2-0.
The goal was Roche's second goal of the season, with his first coming against Cal State Fullerton.
UCLA's defense stood tall the remainder of the night, as Box collected three saves in the closing minutes, preserving UCLA's shutout and the win.
Up Next: UCLA returns to action on Friday, October 17, at No. 13 Michigan. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network with kickoff scheduled for 3 pm PT.
