Bruins Split a Pair of Duals at No. 10 Michigan, Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 23 UCLA Swimming and Diving program split a pair of dual meets on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins beat Northwestern 165.5-134.5 and fell to No. 10 Michigan 193-103 at the Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan.

UCLA's 400 medley relay team of Rosie Murphy, Sarah Bennetts, Jada Duncan, and Gizem Guvenc opened the meet with a third-place finish in 3:34.55.

The Bruins followed that with a strong showing in the 100 yard backstroke. Claudia Yovanovich took the win in 52.87, while Murphy finished second in 52.93, while Fay Lustria swept the podium places for the Bruins with a third-place finish in 53.37.

As for the 100 yard breaststroke, Bennetts continued her strong start to the season with a second place finish in the event. The junior touched the wall in 1:01.24 to secure the second-place finish.

Freshman Jada Duncan took third in the 50 free a few events later, touching the wall in 22.30.

On the diving boards, Eden Cheng and Molly Brascia finished in second and third. Cheng took second with a score of 295.30 while Brascia finished third with a score of 271.95. Both scores were NCAA cuts, which clinched spots at the NCAA Zones meet for both athletes.

In the 200 backstroke, Murphy continued her solid day with a 1:53.99 to take second. Her time of 1:53.99 is an NCAA 'A' cut time, guaranteeing her a spot at the NCAA Championships in the event.

Murphy and freshman Applejean Gwinn took second and third in the 400 IM. Murphy hit her second 'A' cut of the meet by finishing in 4:11.80, while Gwinn took third with a time of 4:18.00.

To conclude the day, Cheng took first in the 3-meter competition, while Brascia finished third. Cheng took the win with a score of 299.80, while Brascia finished third with a score of 287.15. Both scores were 'A' qualifiers, and earned both divers spots at NCAA Zones.

Up Next: The Bruins return to action on November 7 at Arizona State. The meet is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
