November 06, 2025 | Women's Soccer
St. Louis, Mo. - No. 3 seed UCLA fell to No. 2 seed Michigan State, 2-1, in overtime in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal.ย
Emma Egizii put UCLA ahead in the 11th minute, but Michigan State's Emerson Sargeant scored the tying goal in the 67th minute and the winning goal in the fourth minute of overtime to advance the Spartans to the Championship.
The Bruins (11-5-3) dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Spartans, 9-3, and holding a 6-1 shots on goal advantage. In the eighth minute, Bella Winn had a shot headed for goal that was cleared off the line by Michigan State defender Remini Tillotson. Just two minutes later, the Bruins had another opportunity. America Frias connected with Egizii in the center outside of the box, and Egizii lasered a right-footed shot to the left post to beat Michigan State goalkeeper Noelle Henning. The goal was Egizii's fourth of the year. Oruha Hayashi was credited with an assist along with Frias.
Michigan State (12-3-5) played more aggressively in the second half seeking the equalizer and got it in the 67th minute following a takeaway. The Spartans quickly moved it up the field, getting it to Big Ten Forward of the Year Kennedy Bell, who drew the Bruin defense and passed off to Sargeant in front of goal. Sargeant slotted it in to the right post for the tying goal.
The Bruin defense made some big plays late in the second half to keep it even. Defender Paloma Daubert made a backline save on a shot by Shelby Vaughn in the 81st minute. Goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor made a huge diving save on a hard shot by Kayla Briggs in the 87th minute, and Jennie Immethun cleared away a ball headed towards Bell in the box in the final 25 seconds of regulation.
Overtime nearly ended immediately, as Sargeant's shot hit the right post 10 seconds into extra time. She did not miss a second time at 93:35, intercepting a Nakfoor pass in the box and scoring the golden goal.ย
The Bruins will await their path in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection show airs on Monday, Nov. 10 at 1pm PT on NCAA.com.
