No. 1 UCLA Takes Down Two Top 10 Teams

LOS ANGELESย -- No. 1 UCLA (7-1) earned a pair of top 10 victories on the first dayย of competition in the Battle for LA at Mapes Beach today sweeping No. 8 Long Beach State, 5-0, in the morning and defeating No. 6 Cal Poly, 4-1, in the afternoon.ย With the 13th-straight win over the Beach, the Bruins improved to 13-4 overall against LBSU. UCLA extended its winning streak to 15 (15-0) in the series against the Mustangs.
In the first dual against LBSU, the Bruinsย went up 1-0 UCLA on court two as graduate student Peri Brennan and senior Natalie Myszkowski took down Julia Westby and Skyler Germann in straight sets, 21-16, 21-11.
The Bruins would earn their second point on court four as redshirt freshman Kaley Mathews and freshman Alexa Fernandez defeated LBSU's Savannah Standage and Natalie Glenn in three sets, 17-21, 22-20, 15-13.
UCLA's court five pair ofย freshman Harper Cooper and senior Sophie Moore clinched the dual victory with a 21-18, 21-16 win over Demi Wagdy and Megan Widener.

The Bruins' redshirt sophomore tandem of Kenzie Brower and Ensley Alden finished off the sweep on court three with a 21-12, 21-15 win over the Beach's Mo Gibson and Brooke Birch.
Tessa Van Winkle and Madeline Bonanni split a pair of sets in exhibition action on court six, 21-12, 19-21, to Kealoha Phillips and Sammy Okano.
In the dual against the Mustangs, Cal Poly put the first point on the board when Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter defeated Brennan and Myszkowski on court two in a three-set thriller, 21-15, 16-21, 15-13.
UCLA tied it up at 1-1 on court four as Mathews and Fernandez outlasted CP's Ella Connor and Katie Clevenger, 21-16, 22-24, 15-9.
The Bruins took a 2-1 lead after a 21-15, 21-15 win on court five by Cooper and Moore over the Mustangs' Summer Witherby and former Bruin, Lindsey Sparks.
UCLA's court three pair of Alden and Brower clinched the dual victory with a 21-15, 21-18 win over Madi Nichols and Quinn Perry.
Boyd and Perez rallied to provide the 4-1 final with a three-set winย over Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep, 20-22, 21-15, 15-11.
Reagan Hope and Adelina Okazaki posted an exhibition win over Abbey Reinardย and Maddy Byrne 21-17, 21-18.
