March 16, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE โ The UCLA women's tennis team settled for a split on its first-ever Big Ten Conference road trip Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 19 Washington by a 4-1 score at Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Bruins (6-5, 1-1 in Big Ten play) earned the doubles point, but were unable to get on the board in singles play. The Huskies (10-2, 1-1) rallied with singles wins by Alexia Jacobs, Carina Syrtveit, Erika Matsuda and clincher Reece Carter.
Washington established an early advantage in doubles play behind its 85th-ranked pair of Carter and Jacobs. The Huskies collected their final three games against No. 12 Kimmi Hance/Elise Wagle for a 6-3 victory. UCLA answered on Court 2, where the third-ranked combination of Olivia Center and Kate Fakih broke the serve of Matsuda and Sophie Luescher for 1-0 and again for 5-2 en route to a 6-2 win. Center/Fakih has won four consecutive decisions.
Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, ranked 90th as a tandem, broke Syrtveit and McKenna Koenig out of the gate and that was all the Bruins needed. The 6-4 win represented the team's fourth in five tries and was its second clincher of the season.
No. 52 Fakih suffered her first singles loss of the year, dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Jacobs on Court 3. Fakih was 9-0 in dual-match singles play prior to Sunday.
Syrtveit put Washington in the driver's seat on Court 6, holding off Center for a 6-2, 7-6(4) result. Moments later, Matsuda bested No. 100 Hance 6-4, 6-4 on Court 2.
No. 16 Lutkemeyer had her five-match winning streak snapped in the decider, as she fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 versus Carter. The top-court loss was Lutkemeyer's first.
UCLA returns home Saturday, March 22 to face No. 4 Michigan. First serve from Los Angeles Tennis Center is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT. Michigan State stops by the next day for a 10 a.m. PT start.
