No. 1 UCLA Beats No. 8 Richmond 84-67, Advances to Sweet Sixteen

LOS ANGELES - The No. 1-ranked UCLA Women's Basketball team (32-2) won its second-round matchup against No. 9-seed Richmond at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Financial on Sunday night, 84-67. With the win, UCLA advances to the Sweet Sixteen on Friday, March 28, in Spokane, Washington.

UCLA's junior duo of Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice combined for 53 points in the win over Richmond (28-7). Timea Gardiner also finished in double figures with 11 points.
 
Betts finished with 30 points on 14-of-17 shooting while also grabbing 14 rebounds. The win marked Betts' 17th double-double and third 30-point game of the season.
 
Rice scored 23 points with a career-high four three-pointers. The game was Rice's third 20-point outing of the season, and she also finished with seven assists.

With the win, the Bruins move on to the Sweet Sixteen for the third consecutive season.

The Bruins were outscored by the Spiders 20-18 in the first quarter. Betts scored on the opening possession off of an assist from Rice. Betts then recorded her own assist to Jaquez, who hit a three-pointer. Rice completed an and-1 before the Bruins went on a three-minute scoring drought and the Spiders went on a 5-0 run. The drought was ended off of a bucket from Janiah Barker. In the final minutes of the frame, Timea Gardiner hit a tough midrange jumper before blocking a shot on the other end.
 
The Bruins were able to tie the game at 36-36 heading into the halftime break. Rice finished a 3-point shot early in the quarter, and then Betts hit a layup to put the Bruins in front, 23-22, with 8:24 to go in the quarter. Betts recorded a team-high eight points in the quarter, including a shot created from an offensive rebound through three defenders while Gardiner hit a three-pointer with an assist from Rice as the Bruins entered the halftime break tied with the Spiders, 36-36.
 
The Bruins came alive in the third quarter, scoring 29 points and holding the Spiders to seven.
Rice and Betts were dominant in the third frame, combining for 18 points. Betts added five rebounds, and Rice added three assists while shooting 3-of-4 from the field. Angela Dugalic hit a clutch three-pointer off of an assist from Betts, who then completed her own three-point play to put UCLA up 42-39. Londynn Jones hit two three-pointers and Dugalic hit another before Betts scored nine consecutive points to give the Bruins a 22-point advantage, 65-43 heading into the final frame.
 
UCLA scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Rice led the quarter in scoring with seven points as well as two rebounds and an assist. Gardiner added six points off of two made three-pointers, while Betts finished the frame with five rebounds and four points and did not miss a shot to propel the Bruins to the 84-67 round of 32 win.

The Bruins will advance to the Sweet Sixteen to face No. 5-seed Ole Miss in Spokane, Washington on Friday, March 28. The tip-off time is TBD.
