LOS ANGELES -- In a match that lasted nearly four-and-a-half hours, the UCLA women's tennis team fell 4-3 versus crosstown rival USC Friday afternoon at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. The match represented the Bruins' final one of the season in non-conference play.
Immi Haddad prevailed in the deciding contest for the Trojans (6-2). The Bruins (5-4) overcame 1-0 and 3-2 deficits to twice tie the score, with Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, Kate Fakih and Kimmi Hance delivering singles wins in order. Also winning for USC in singles play were Jana Hossam and Maia Sung.
Haddad and Emma Charney teamed to give the hosts an early advantage, beating No. 90 Lutkemeyer/Ahmani Guichard 6-1 on Court 3. Then, in a top-15 matchup on Court 1, the eighth-ranked combination of Trojans Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper bested No. 12 Hance/Elise Wagle 6-2 to clinch the initial point.
Singles first sets were split evenly and UCLA quickly answered with straight-set victory on Courts 1 and 3. First to finish was No. 16 Lutkemeyer, who knocked off No. 47 Piper 6-2, 6-4 up top for her fourth win in a row โ and second in as many tries on Court 1.
Next, No. 52 Fakih dealt Fairclough a 6-2, 6-4 loss. The victory gave the Bruins their first lead of the day and ran freshman Fakih's winning streak to 10. She is 8-0 in dual matches.
USC answered on Court 6, where No. 118 Hossam held off Guichard for a 6-0, 7-6(4) result. The Trojans then moved to within a point of a team win when Sung defeated Fernandez 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on Court 5.
UCLA once again found itself level when No. 100 Hance overcame No. 56 Charney 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) on the second court. Each of Hance's two most recent singles victories have been against nationally-ranked foes.
In the end, No. 73 Haddad outlasted No. 67 Wagle for a 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(6) decision on Court 4 that lasted nearly four hours itself. Wagle turned in a three-set win on the same court during the 2024 season, sealing the final Pac-12 Conference regular-season championship for the Bruins.
UCLA begins Big Ten Conference play Friday, March 14, when it visits Oregon. First serve from the Oregon Student Tennis Center is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PT. The Bruins then face Washington two days later at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. That one starts at 2:30 p.m. PT.
