Bruins Finish Seventh in Phoenix at Thunderbird Collegiate

PHOENIX – The No. 10-ranked UCLA men's golf team finished in seventh place out of 10 programs on Saturday at the Thunderbird Collegiate, hosted at Papago Golf Club.
 
The Bruins shot 16-under 836 through three rounds, including a third-round score of 1-over 285 on Saturday. The first two rounds took place on Friday.
 
Host institution Arizona State on the tournament title, carding 39-under 813. Colorado finished in second place, followed by Utah (third place) and New Mexico (fourth place). In all the second place through seventh place finishers were all within 11 strokes. Colorado shot 27-under 825, while Utah finished at 23-under 829.
 
Senior Pablo Ereño concluded the two-day tournament as UCLA's top individual performer. Ereño carded 9-under 204, with round scores of 69-65-70. He had the best score of UCLA's five competitors on Saturday, finishing 1-under 70.
 
Junior Kyle An tied for 17th place, shooting 5-under 208 with round scores of 65-71-72. He shot par on 17 of 18 holes on Saturday, with one bogey on a par-4 at hole 10.
 
Senior Omar Morales finished the tournament 1-under 212, shooting even par (71) on Saturday.
 
Freshman Baylor Larrabee concluded the event at 1-over 214, while sophomore Luke Powell shot 8-over 221.
 
Bruins' freshman Trevor Garus, competing as an individual at Papago Golf Club, shot 2-under 212 over three rounds. He registered round scores of 71-68-72.
 
Saturday's final round at the Thunderbird Collegiate marked UCLA's final regular-season spring competition. The Bruins will be back in action at the Big Ten Championship later this month (scheduled for April 25-27). This year's Big Ten Championship is set to take place in Baltimore, Md., at Baltimore Country Club.

PHOENIX – The Bruins shot 17-under 551 through the first two rounds of the Thunderbird Collegiate on Friday at Papago Golf Club.
 
The Bruins closed the day in a three-way tie for fifth place out of 10 teams competing at the Thunderbird Collegiate. UCLA shot 11-under 273 through the first 18 holes and finished at 6-under 278 in the second round.
 
Tournament host Arizona State (31-under 537) led the group of 10 teams through the first two rounds on Friday. Houston (21-under 547) was sitting in second place, followed by third-place Grand Canyon (18-under 550) and a three-way tie between UCLA, New Mexico and Utah.
 
Bruins' senior Pablo Ereño was tied for fourth place through the event's first two rounds. Ereño (8-under 134) registered round scores of 2-under 69 and 6-under 65 at Papago Golf Club. Junior Kyle An (6-under 136) carded 6-under 65 through the first round and even par (71) in the second round. An enters Saturday's final round in a tie for eighth place.
 
UCLA's other three competitors included senior Omar Morales (34th, 1-under 141), freshman Baylor Larrabee (T-35, even 142) and sophomore Luke Powell (T-53, 5-over 147).
 
Ereño finished the second round with seven birdies and one bogey on hole 1. Through both rounds, Ereño registered 11 birdies and three bogeys.
 
An totaled six birdies and no bogeys through the first round on Friday. He concluded the second round of the tournament with three birdies and three bogeys.
 
Freshman Trevor Garus carded 3-under 139, competing as an individual. He shot even par (71) in the first round and finished 3-under 68 in the second round.
 
Friday's competition marked the Bruins second tournament in one week. Last week, the Bruins competed at the Calusa Cup in Naples, Fla., spending three days on the course at Calusa Pines Golf Club (April 6-8). UCLA finished in third place out of nine teams.
