No. 12 Men's Golf Looks Ahead to Big Ten Championships

April 23, 2025 | Men's Golf

BALTIMORE – The No. 12-ranked UCLA men's golf team will compete at the Big Ten Championships from April 25-27, hosted at Baltimore Country Club.

Competing in their first year as Big Ten Conference members, the Bruins will enter the 18-team conference tournament field as one of five programs ranked among the top 40 teams (as ranked weekly by Scoreboard powered by Clippd).

The 54-hole competition will begin on Friday, April 25, and extend through Sunday, April 27. This will mark the Bruins' final tournament of the spring season before the NCAA Championships begin in mid May. UCLA will be playing in its fourth tournament along the East Coast of the country this week and its first event in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast region. In the fall, UCLA played in one tournament in Georgia, and the Bruins competed in two spring tournaments in Florida.

"We are preparing just like we do for any tournament, getting our guys' minds right and oriented around what to expect," UCLA head coach Armen Kirakossian said. "We have never seen the golf course, but we've studied up on it. We have talked to people who have seen the course and have been there a lot. We are learning what shots will be required and trying to figure out what type of grass it's going to be – what are the normal winds, and what will the temperatures be like, just relaying that information to our guys and getting them prepared. We will go there with a lot of excitement built up around our first Big Ten Championship. This is new for us, but just like any other golf tournament, we will go there with the intention to play our best. What we're doing this week is preparing our best so we can go there and have the best result that we possibly can. We are excited to see it. We have heard great things about Baltimore Country Club. It's a place that none of us have been to before, but it should be really good, and we are very much looking forward to our first Big Ten Championship."

UCLA's lineup for this week's competition in Baltimore will include two seniors (Pablo Ereño, Omar Morales), one junior (Kyle An) and two freshmen (Baylor Larrabee, Trevor Garus). Bruins' sophomore Luke Powell will serve as the team's substitute.

Last Season at the Conference Championship
The Bruins placed sixth at 64-over (370-381-376-357) one year ago at the Pac-12 Championships, hosted at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz. Omar Morales fired a 6-under 65 in the final round of the conference championships to finish in a tie for third place (+2). Morales shot the best score out of the 72-golfer field in the final round with two eagles and three birdies. His three-day performance in last year's Pac-12 Championships matched his lowest 18-hole score of the season and moved him 13 spots up the leaderboard. Course host Arizona State won the team title in 2024 with a score of 27-over (368-365-362-352). Stanford's Karl Vilips was the tournament medalist with a final score of 2-under (68-75-71-68). UCLA's Kyle An joined Morales in the top 20, finishing 11-over in a tie for 15th place.

Past Championships
UCLA last secured a first-place finish at the year-end conference championship tournament in 2006. The Burins finished first at the Pac-10 Championships, hosted Bighorn's Canyon Course in Palm Desert, Calif., in April of 2006. UCLA shot even par at the tournament, as Daniel Im won the tournament medal after carding 7-under 277. Since 2006, the Bruins registered second-place finishes at the Pac-12 Tournament in 2007, 2013 and 2019.
