UCLA Finishes Second at NCAA Gymnastics Championships
April 19, 2025 | Gymnastics
Fort Worth, Texas - Fifth-seeded UCLA finished as the national runner-up at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. Second-seeded Oklahoma took the title with a score of 198.0125, four-tenths ahead of the Bruins, who scored 197.6125. No. 7 seed Missouri was third with 197.2500, and No. 4 seed Utah was fourth with a 197.2375.
The Bruins began the meet with a big score of 49.6125 on floor exercise, tying for first with Oklahoma, who matched that total on balance beam. The Sooners claimed sole possession of first in rotation two after totaling 49.5875 on floor exercise while UCLA scored 49.2875 on vault. Down by three-tenths of a point going into rotation three, the Bruins scored 49.4000 on uneven bars to remain in contention, sticking four of six dismounts. Oklahoma, however, hit a 49.4375 on vault to remain in first with a 148.6375 to UCLA's 148.3000. Needing to make up .3375 on beam in the final rotation, the Bruins fell short, scoring 49.3125 to Oklahoma's 49.3750 on bars.
Starting on floor exercise for the fourth consecutive meet. Katelyn Rosen kicked off the floor party with perhaps her best routine of the season, nailing all of her tumbling passes. Macy McGowan followed up with a matching 9.8875, and Emma Malabuyo scored 9.8750. Competing on floor exercise for the last time in her career, graduate Chae Campbell stuck her full-twisting double back opening pass on the way to a 9.9250. NCAA floor champion Brooklyn Moors stuck her final pass and scored 9.9375. Jordan Chiles closed the rotation with a nearly perfect routine, receiving 10s from three of the six judges and a final score of 9.9750. UCLA's total of 49.6125 put them in a tie with Oklahoma, who matched that score on balance beam. Utah scored 49.4500 on uneven bars, and Missouri totaled 49.2000 on vault.
On vault in rotation two, the Bruins started with three consecutive 9.825s. Emily Lee had a small hop back on her Yurchenko full, Riley Jenkins got nice distance on her Yurchenko 1.5 and stepped forward, and Moors skidded back on her vault. McGowan stepped up the scoring with a 9.8375, and Campbell drilled another vault, sticking her Yurchenko full for a 9.9000. Chiles added a 9.900 of her own to get the Bruins to a 49.2875 on the event. Oklahoma took over sole possession of first after scoring 49.5875 on floor, three-tenths ahead of the Bruins. Utah and Missouri remained in third place after scoring 49.1875 on beam and 49.175 on bars, respectively.
Stuck dismounts on four of six uneven bars routines helped the Bruins total 49.4000 on the event and keep the Bruins close. Campbell led off by sticking her double front for a 9.8625 score. Rosen stuck her double layout dismount and also scored 9.8625. Malabuyo stuck her full-twisting double back and scored 9.8875. Also scoring for the Bruins were McGowan with a 9.8250 and Frida Esparza with a 9.7625. Oklahoma, meanwhile, scored 49.43750 on vault to slightly increase its lead to .3375.
Needing big scores on beam to catch up to Oklahoma, Lee delivered a huge leadoff 9.9250, and Chiles and Malabuyo scored 9.9375s. But a few wobbles cost the Bruins, who scored 49.3125 and were unable to catch the Sooners, who scored 49.3750 on bars to reclaim the championship.
By finishing second, UCLA improved its national finish by 15 spots from a year ago. The Bruins also started the 2025 season by scoring 195.250 in the season opener and rebounded by finishing the year with 15 consecutive scores of 197 or higher, going unbeaten in the Big Ten to win the regular season title and then winning the Big Ten Championship with a Championship record score.
"If you had told me at the end of last year or even the beginning of the season that we would finish in second (at the NCAA Championships), I would be ecstatic," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. "So when I look at the big picture, I'm incredibly proud of this team for getting us back here and really kick-starting the next chapter of UCLA Gymnastics."
