Women's Tennis Falls to Michigan in Big Ten Semifinals

OJAI, Calif. – The fourth-seeded UCLA women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 1 seed Michigan Friday in the semifinal round of the 2025 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament at Libbey Park.
The Bruins (16-8) got a straight-set singles victory from Elise Wagle. Each of the day's final three matches went to a third set, with two left unfinished when Emily Sartz-Lunde of the Wolverines (23-3) delivered the deciding point. Also victorious in singles play for Michigan were Piper Charney and Reese Miller.
Doubles play went the distance, with the Court 3 matchup proving the difference. In the end, Charney/Sartz-Lunde outlasted Ahmani Guichard/Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer 6-3 to give the Wolverines the initial point. A top-20 matchup on Court 1 went the way of No. 15 Wagle/Kimmi Hance, which defeated No. 20 Jessica Bernales/Lily Jones 6-2. Michigan's other win came when Miller/Julian Fliegner topped Olivia Center/Kate Fakih 6-2 on Court 2.
UCLA took two first sets and ultimately forced third sets on two others. The Wolverines extended their lead to 3-0 when No. 25 Charney beat No. 84 Hance 6-3, 6-1 on Court 2 and Miller followed by besting Guichard 6-2, 6-1 on Court 5.
No. 66 Wagle earned her second singles victory in as many days, taking down No. 41 Jones by a 6-4, 6-4 count. Wagle's personal singles winning streak reached eight – all in straight sets – with her latest performance. She has taken down six nationally-ranked players this season.
The all-freshman battle on Court 4 went the way of No. 82 Sartz-Lunde, who downed No. 33 Fakih 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to clinch a spot for Michigan in the final.
