Ohio State's No. 17-ranked doubles pair Teah Chavez and Hephzibah Oluwadare set the tone early with a 6โ2 win over UCLA's 31st-ranked duo Olivia Center and Kate Fakih on Court 1. The Buckeyes clinched the doubles point at Court 3, where Sophia Cisse and Audrey Spencer topped Bruin freshmen Kayla Chung and Mayu Crossley, 6โ3. UCLA's lone doubles lead came at Court 2, where Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer were up 5โ4 when their match was halted.
In singles play, the Buckeyes needed three wins to close out the match โ and wasted little time. Straight-set victories from Spencer (Court 4) and Chavez (Court 1) put Ohio State on the brink before Alessia Cau sealed it with a 6โ4, 7โ5 win over Center at the No. 6 spot.
Despite the setback, UCLA had bright spots in a pair of unfinished matches. Crossley battled nation No. 3 Luciana Perry deep into a deciding third set at Court 2, and Guichard was a game away from victory on Court 5, leading 6โ4, 5โ4 when play was suspended.
UCLA returns to action Sunday, hosting Penn State at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
