No. 25 Bruins Finish Ninth at Big Ten Championships
May 18, 2025 | Women's Rowing
Indianapolis, Ind. – No. 25-ranked UCLA Rowing claimed victories in the 3V8+ and the 2V4+ petite finals to help the Bruins to 72 points at their first Big Ten Championships.
UCLA started its day at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park in the grand finals of the 4V8+. The Bruins fought back to edge out Michigan State in the second half of the race, taking fifth.
The Bruins gained momentum in the next two races, placing first in the petite finals of the 3V8+ and 2V4+ races. The second varsity four took open water into the finish line for a commanding win. The Bruins had a powerful start that carried through to the finish line, capturing a 10-second win over second-place Indiana.
UCLA got back onto the podium in the 1V4+ petite final. The race came down to a photo finish against Iowa; the Bruins crossed the line in third, just behind the Hawkeyes after the crews were locked in battle for the final 500 meters.
The 2V8+ was bow ball to bow ball with No. 17 Ohio State and Michigan State for a majority of the 2,000-meter race. In the final 300 meters, bow seat of Ohio State caught a crab and the Bruins moved into the top two. Michigan State outlasted UCLA in the sprint as the Bruins claimed second place in the petite final.
The day concluded with a fifth-place finish in the 1V8+ petite final. All five crews had contact until late in the final race of the conference championship regatta; second through fifth place all finished within one and a half seconds of each other in the 1V8+ petite final Sunday.
At the conclusion of the regatta, junior Danielle DeFrancisci was named a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree for UCLA, and junior Kaija Frassrand was named All-Big Ten Second Team.
