Quan, van Loben Sels Earn ITA Regional Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. โ Rudy Quan and Emon van Loben Sels of the UCLA men's tennis team were named Regional Award winners by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for 2024-25, it was announced Tuesday.
Quan was selected ITA Southwest Region Rookie of the Year, while van Loben Sels collected the ITA Southwest Region Most Improved Player and ITA Southwest Region Player to Watch honors. Winners were voted on by Southwest Region head coaches. ITA National Awards will be published Thursday.
Freshman Quan occupied the top singles court for a majority of the Bruins' matches. He finished the campaign with an overall singles record of 13-8 including tournament play. Eight of Quan's singles victories came against nationally-ranked players, helping raise his ITA singles ranking to a season-high No. 20 on May 1. He has also been named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and been placed on the All-Big Ten First Team, as well as the conference's All-Freshman Team.
It was a breakout season for van Loben Sels, whose standout moment came in the Big Ten Tournament championship match. The redshirt sophomore was the last player standing in a 4-3 win that snapped top-seeded Ohio State's 76-match winning streak. For his heroics, van Loben Sels was tabbed the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Counting fall action, van Loben Sels posted team highs in total wins (47), singles wins (24), doubles wins (23) and dual-match doubles wins (19). He reached the top 80 of the ITA's singles (No. 63 โ Feb. 5) and doubles (No. 77 with partner Spencer Johnson โ Aug. 27) rankings. After posting just six dual-match singles decisions โ including three on Court 6 -- in 2024, van Loben Sels found a home on Court 2 in 2025. He also made his NCAA Championships singles debut during the fall.
