January 31, 2026 | Men's Tennis
STANFORD, Calif. – The 16th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team pushed No. 3 Stanford nearly to its limit, but ultimately fell Saturday in a 4-2 decision at Arrillaga Tennis Center – Taube Pavilion. The deciding match on Court 1 ended in a 15-13 second-set tiebreaker.
Samir Banerjee prevailed in clinching fashion for the Cardinal (5-0). The Bruins (2-2) earned the doubles point, which was ultimately determined by another top-court tiebreaker, before Cassius Chinlund added a singles victory to the tally.
UCLA mixed up its doubles lineup for the first time in 2026 and the change paid off, with Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels posting a 6-3 win on Court 3 turned all eyes to Court 1. An ensuing tiebreaker then went the way of Spencer Johnson and Aadarsh Tripathi by a 7-6(4) margin.
The Bruins snagged a pair of singles first sets. After Stanford's Alex Razeghi tied the team score on Court 5, Chinlund delivered his third dual singles win in as many tries. His 7-5, 6-4 triumph on Court 6 put the Bruins back ahead at 2-1.
Straight-set victories by Hudson Rivera on Court 3 and then Jagger Leach on Court 4 gave the Cardinal its first lead of the day. With UCLA's Rudy Quan two games away from victory on Court 2, the top-court players traded shots. Banerjee claimed the last two against No. 75 Johnson for the difference.
The Bruins return to action Sunday at Hellman Tennis Complex, where they will No. 23 California. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT.
