June 13, 2025 | Track & Field

Days 1&2 Recap

EUGENE, Ore. โ€“ Michael Pinckney earned a fifth-place finish in the men's discus final and Gabriel Clement II placed eighth in the men's 400m final as the Bruin men completed their season Friday on Day 3 of the 2025 Outdoor NCAA Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of Oregon.

In addition, Sydney Johnson completed the first four events of the women's heptathlon on Friday.

Pinckney became the first member of the men's squad to score, finishing with a long mark of 61.39m (201-5) on his second attempt. That was his longest throw this season in a collegiate event, and trails only his lifetime-best 62.28m (206-2) from earlier this year during the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, Okla.

Pinckney is the first Bruin to score in the men's discus since 2019 โ€“when Dotun Ogundeji was fourth at 60.54m โ€“ and his mark was the longest by a UCLA thrower at NCAAs since Julian Wruck cleared 62.56m in 2014 en route to a runner-up national finish.

Later on in the afternoon, Clement became the second member of the men's squad to score after running 46.17 in the final to land in eighth place. He became the first Bruin to earn First Team All-America honors in that event since Craig Everhart placed seventh in 2006.

Johnson found herself in 17th place in the women's heptathlon with four of seven events completed. She finished in the upper half in the both the 100m hurdles (13.79, 12th) and 200m (24.35, ninth) and also logged a PR in the shot put (12.23m, 15th). She'll compete in her best event, the long jump, on Saturday alongside the javelin and 800m. She's looking to become the first Bruin to score in the heptathlon at NCAAs since Kendall Gustafson was fourth in 2018.

The Bruins conclude the 2025 season on Saturday with the final day of women's competition. Besides the heptathlon, UCLA will also have entrants in the high jump (Valentina Fakrogha) and finals for the 100m hurdles (Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck) and 4x400 relay (Kayla McBride, Taylor Snaer, Aly Conyers, Naomi Johnson).
