March 27, 2026 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES โ Simon Skoumal (hammer throw) and Arrin Sagiraju (1500m) both posted runner-up finishes to lead UCLA on Friday at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival at Drake Stadium.
The meet served as the Bruins' home opener for the 2026 season. UCLA finishes up the weekend on Saturday with the Jim Bush Legends Meet from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Though the hammer and javelin were held on Friday, they are technically part of the Jim Bush Legends Meet.
Skoumal was the clear standout for the Bruins during the early portion of the meet, setting a big PB in the hammer throw at 62.16m (203-11) to finish second. That mark was an improvement of over a dozen feet on his previous PB. Skoumal was one of just three throwers in the field to break the 60-meter mark.
Maya Rush and Sydney Johnson were the first Bruins to compete on Friday, with Rush landing in sixth place in the women's javelin after recording a long mark of 43.82m (143-9).
UCLA's best results during the distance portion of the meet came in the early events, particularly the 1500.
On the women's side, Olivia Foody dropped six seconds off her PB and finished fourth overall after clocking in at 4:23.08. Kaho Cichon (4:26.29) wasn't far behind, earning a top-10 result. Lastly, freshman Evie Marheineke won her heat with a time of 4:29.70.
UCLA had a pair of top-five finishers on the men's side of the 1500, headlined by Arrin Sagiraju who finished second with a time of 3:43.27, just missing out on a UCLA all-time top-10 time. Jack Falkowski placed fourth after checking in at 3:44.41.
The Bruins had no entries, or had runners pull out early, in the 3000m steeplechase, 5k, and 10k. Marheineke was leading the women's steeplechase before exiting the field in the latter half of the race.
