Men's Tennis Adds All-Big West First-Teamer Nguyen
June 16, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ All-Big West Conference standout Andy Nguyen has signed a grant-in-aid with UCLA, men's tennis head coach Billy Martin announced Monday. Nguyen, a transfer from UC Irvine and native of Long Beach, Calif., will join the Bruins for 2025-26 and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The 5-8 left-hander has had a decorated start to his collegiate career, winning Big West Freshman of the Year in 2024 and collecting all-conference honors for singles and doubles โ including first-team nods in 2024-25 โ each of his two years. The Anteaters won a pair of Big West championships thanks in large part to Nguyen, who was unbeaten in his final 32 league singles contests (24-0).
"I'm so excited to have Andy joining our team this year," said Martin. "I actually recruited him coming out of high school, but unfortunately he didn't join us. I have been able to watch his progress while he's been at UC Irvine and know he'll be a valuable asset โ in both singles and doubles โ to our team next season."
Nguyen posted a 17-2 dual-match singles record in 2025, winning his last 16 decisions. He went 20-4 overall in singles play, tallying noteworthy victories against No. 52 Iiro Vasa of San Diego, No. 83 Savriyan Danilov of San Diego and 125 Nico Godsick of Stanford. Nguyen played exclusively on the second singles court, aside from a pair of top-court triumphs.
He manned the top doubles court as a sophomore, playing primarily alongside Noah Zamora. One of the pair's team-high nine doubles wins came opposite UCLA's All-American tandem of Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi, which was ranked No. 10 at the time.
Nguyen burst onto the college tennis scene in 2023-24, going 18-6 in singles play. He was 12-4 in dual-match appearances ranging in lineup position from Courts 2-5. Nguyen picked up the first of his three career Big West Player of the Week honors during a personal seven-match singles winning streak capped in the conference championship tilt. He also registered 14 doubles victories, with 11 of them coming in dual-match action.
Nguyen helped Millikan High School win its first-ever CIF Southern Section title in 2021. The next year saw him named Press-Telegram Boys Tennis Player of the Year after claiming the CIF Southern Section singles championship. Nguyen also won a pair of Moore League singles crowns.
