LOS ANGELES - No. 18 UCLA shut out No. 1 Stanford, 2-0, handing the Cardinal its first loss of the season. The Bruins (4-2) picked up their fourth shutout of the year and third in a row. ย
Bella Winn scored in the fifth minute of the game, and Lexi Wright added an insurance goal in the 79th as UCLA took down a top-ranked Stanford team for the first time ever. UCLA's defense held down the nation's top offense, with freshman goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor recording nine saves on 21 Cardinal shots.ย
An energized Bruin squad made a statement early. At the four-minute mark, Emma Egizii sent a shot to the upper right corner that Stanford goalkeeper Caroline Birkel batted away, but Winn was there at the right post to tap in the rebound. The goal was Winn's second of the season.ย
Nakfoor and the Bruin defense kept Stanford (6-1) at bay throughout the game. With the Bruins holding on to a 1-0 halftime lead, Nakfoor was tested immediately in the 46th minute with a hard shot by Jasmine Aikey. Nakfoor dove to her left to punch the ball away and scrambled back up to save the rebound shot by Allie Montoya. Nakfoor also came up big in the 66th minute to stop an onrushing Brooke Holden in front of the box, and the Bruin defense did just enough to force Eleanor Klinger to shoot wide on the follow-up shot.ย
Wright gave the Bruins some breathing room in the 79th minute. The redshirt senior was forced to sit out all of 2024 with a knee injury, and she netted her first goal since the 2023 season. Oruha Hayashi fed Wright with an incredible long pass to the middle. Wright burst past her defender to collect the ball just outside of the box and then fired past Birkel to find the back of the net.ย
Nakfoor finished with nine saves, the most by a Bruin goalkeeper since Lauren Brzykcy totaled nine against No. 2 Duke in 2022. Birkel had two saves on six UCLA shots.ย
"We knew we were going to give up chances from outside, but if you look at legitimate chances, I thought we limited them for the most part," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "A lot of their shots were off-balance or from distance. Really proud of our backline. Today's performance really relied on team defense. From our nines down to our goalkeeper, I thought everyone did a really good job."

What a pass by Oruha Hayashi, and what a goal by Lexi Wright, her first goal since coming back from injury last year! ??
