Quan Clutch in Bruins' Road Upset of No. 9 San Diego
February 26, 2026 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO โ Rudy Quan was the last man standing as the UCLA men's tennis team took down No. 9 San Diego 4-3 Thursday at Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Bruins trailed 3-2 until Emon van Loben Sels and Quan finished off three-set victories.
Joining Quan and van Loben Sels in the singles win column for UCLA (6-3) was Spencer Johnson. The Bruins collected the doubles point with two commanding victories. The Toreros (7-3) took the lead after Stian Klaassen and Lambert Ruland prevailed in singles play. Neo Niedner added their third and final win.
UCLA jumped out to big leads on the first and second doubles courts and those quickly turned into a pair of 6-2 victories. First to finish was the Court 2 tandem of van Loben Sels and Gianluca Ballotta, which took down Klaasseen/Manvydas Balciunas for its fifth consecutive wins to start the season. Then it was Johnson and Aadarsh Tripathi, who partnered to take down the nation's 15th-ranked combination of Ruland/Adrien Berrut.
USD took four singles first sets and saw two of those become straight-set victories. Klaassen dealt Ballotta a 6-2, 6-4 defeat on Court 4 before Ruland bested Tripathi 6-4, 6-4 on the next court down.
Tasked with taking down the nation's 32nd-ranked player and putting a stop to the Toreros momentum, No. 61 Spencer Johnson did both. The junior also kept his top-court match in two sets, holding off Oliver Tarvet for a 6-3, 7-6(4) decision. The win improved Johnson's record against nationally-ranked players to 4-2 this season. He is 7-1 in dual singles play.
Niedner outlasted Bengt Reinhard 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Court 6 to put USD back in front. No. 26 van Loben Sels responded for the Bruins, though, overcoming No. 83 Balciunas 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Court 3 for his team-high fifth ranked victory.
No. 105 Quan and Vincent Marysko went blow for blow in the third set on Court 2. Alternating breaks put the match back on serve with the ball in Marysko's court and Quan leading 6-5. Quan ensured a tiebreaker would not be necessary, though, as he jumped out to a 40-0 lead en route to the 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 decider. That marked his second clincher of the campaign. He also delivered the fourth point in a 4-2 triumph at Pepperdine (Feb. 7).
