UCLA Wins Two on First Day of Center of Effort Challenge

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - No. 2 UCLA won a pair of matches on Day One of the Center of Effort Beach Volleyball Challenge in San Luis Obispo. The Bruins defeated No. 9 California 4-1 before edging out No. 6 Cal Poly.

Against California, the Bruins dropped the first point on court 1 before reeling off four straight to win the match 4-1. Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden tied it up at 1-1 with a 21-19, 21-14 win over Grace Hong and Marilu Pally on court 2. Harper Cooper and Alexa Fernandez followed suit with a 21-12, 21-17 court 3 victory over Gia Fisher and Ava Haughy. Ava Williamson and Adelina Okazaki earned a 21-19, 27-25 win against Mila Vugrincic and Jenna Colligan on court 4 to solidify the team victory. Kenzie Brower and Mallory LaBreche closed it out with a 21-15, 15-21, 27-25 win over Bella Adishian and Mila Yarich on court 5.

Host Cal Poly gave UCLA a tough challenge for the second consecutive week. After Maggie Boyd and Sally Perez beat Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep in straight-sets on court 1 (21-15, 21-16), the Mustangs got a point back on court 3 with a 21-18, 21-18 victory by Quinn Perry and Ashleigh Adams. The Mustangs erased one-set deficits on courts 2 and 5 to force third-set tiebreakers, and Williamson and Okazaki came back from dropping the first set to win the second and force a third on court 4. Cal Poly went ahead 2-1 with a 15-21, 21-14, 15-12 win on court 2. Brower and LaBreche evened the match at 2-2 with a 21-17, 19-21, 15-10 victory over Peyton Dueck and Bailey Showalter on court 5. With the match on the line, Williamson and Okazaki earned the win for the Bruins win with a come-from-behind 19-21, 23-21, 15-12 victory over Julia Westby and Elise Lenahan.

The Bruins (23-4) will play two more on Saturday, beginning with a 10:15am match against No. 13 Arizona State.
