Men's Tennis Blanks USC to Advance in Ojai
April 23, 2026 | Men's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. โ The fifth-seeded UCLA men's tennis team defeated No. 4 seed USC 4-0 Thursday in Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal-round action at Libbey Park. The event is making its first-ever appearance at the historic Ojai, Calif. facility.
Aadarsh Tripathi played the role of hero for the Bruins (17-6), who advance to face top-seeded Michigan State in Friday's first semifinal. The Spartans defeated No. 9 seed Indiana 4-1 in Friday's opening match.
Joining Tripathi in the win column were Cassius Chinlund and Rudy Quan. UCLA took five first sets in singles play before the Trojans (18-7) charged back. Each of the three unfinished contests, as well as Tripathi's clincher, was in a third set.
The three doubles matches ended almost simultaneously, with Trojans Max Exsted and Andy Trouve first beating Tripathi/Andy Nguyen 6-3 on Court 1. Gianluca Ballotta/Emon van Loben Sels quickly countered for the Bruins, topping Connor Church/Branko Djuric 6-4 on Court 3. Seconds later, Spencer Johnson/Bengt Reinhard downed Andrin Casanova/Jack McCarthy 6-3 on Court 2 to give UCLA the initial point.
No. 87 Quan won his singles first set before No. 70 Exsted claimed four of the first five games in the second. Quan would not allow for a third set, however, taking the final five games and a 6-1, 6-4 victory on Court 2.
A short trek down to the lower courts found Chinlund caught in a back-and-forth second set of his own after winning the first on Court 6. His match against Niels Hoffmann ultimately ended in a tiebreaker, which narrowly went to Chinlund. The 6-2, 7-6(5) decision turned all eyes toward Courts 3 and 4, which were each nearing completion.
Tripathi trailed 0-4 in his deciding set on Court 4. Point by point, Tripathi clawed back into the contest and overcame McCarthy to prevail 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. The victory was No. 100, across singles and doubles matches, of Tripathi's career.
