Keira Goerl Selected UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week

May 19, 2003
Junior pitcher Keira Goerl (Moreno Valley, CA/Valley View HS) of the UCLA Softball Team was selected as the UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 12-18.
Goerl opened NCAA Regional play by pitching four perfect innings against Colgate, a game that would become the third shared perfect game in UCLA softball history (Compton/Doom at 1982 WCWS, Goerl/Dale vs. UC Riverside in 2001). Michelle Turner pitched the final two innings.
She pitched a two-hit shutout against Fresno State in UCLA's second game, striking out five. Won the Saturday game vs. Michigan State, pitching seven innings and striking out six. That victory was her 34th on the season, surpassing the previous school record of 33 set by Lisa Fernandez (1993) and Courtney Dale (1999). Goerl then pitched six shutout innings against Michigan State in the Regional Championship game, allowing just one hit en route to the NCAA Region 2 Most Outstanding Player honors.
For the week, Goerl posted a 0.00 ERA in 24 innings, a 4-0 record, and 19 strikeouts. The opposing batting average was .100.
This is Goerl's first UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and the second of her career.
