Librado Barocio enters his second season as a defensive analyst for the UCLA football team under head coach DeShaun Foster in 2025. It has been a full-circle experience for Barocio, who was a football student-athlete for the Bruins from 2010-14 before embarking on his coaching career.

Barocio in 2024 coached the nickel position for a UCLA defense that ranked in the top half of the Big Ten Conference in a multitude of categories, including total defense (340.8 yards per game). He analyzed opponent passing offenses and assisted with game planning, practice preparation and drills.

Two stints with the NFL’s Washington Commanders under head coach Ron Rivera preceded Barocio’s return to Westwood. A midseason arrival in 2023 saw Barocio operate as a defensive quality control coach, specializing in defensive backs. He earned an internship with Washington through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship during 2023 offseason team activities and made the most of his opportunity, returning for training camp.

Between his stops in Washington, Barocio was an assistant coach at Cornell. He guided the cornerbacks in this role, helping the Big Red hold opponents to an Ivy League-best 176.2 yards per game through the air. Paul Lewis III earned First Team All-Ivy League recognition. Barocio earned his stripes as a graduate assistant at Connecticut in 2022 under Jim Mora, his head coach at UCLA. Barocio most frequently worked alongside the safeties on a unit that finished 24th nationally in turnovers.

Barocio has also held off-field roles at Fresno State and with the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams. He was the director of on-campus recruiting and ultimately an offensive analyst at Fresno State, helping seal the Mountain West Conference’s No. 1 incoming class. Barocio worked in community affairs and engagement for the Rams, specifically developing and structuring camps for area youth.

A Los Angeles native who attended Loyola High School, Barocio joined the Bruins in 2010 as a walk-on. He would earn a scholarship and a number of awards, including UCLA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2015. Barocio was also the Bruins’ nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s best player who began his career as a walk-on, and collected the program’s Jerry Long “Heart” Award in 2014.
